Softball Wins Region 18, Heads to Arizona for Nationals

In the course of a season in college sports there is an ebb-and-flow, and occasionally there is an exclamation point that helps define a season.

Thursday was that exclamation point for the No. 1 Salt Lake Community College softball team, with the Bruins earning an 8-0 win over the College of Southern Idaho to claim the Region 18 tournament and advance to the upcoming NJCAA National Tournament in Arizona. SLCC is now 51-2 overall with the win and will head into the national tournament as the likely top seed.

The Bruins posted a pair of runs early, with Rylee Harris-Thorpe hitting an RBI double to get Salt Lake on the board in the first inning. SLCC added five runs in the third inning, thanks to a Kaytlyn Cripps two-run double that upped the Bruin lead to 7-0 after three innings. Harris-Thorpe added an exclamation point on the championship game in the fourth inning, hitting a solo home run.

SLCC pitcher Nya Laing set the tone for Bruins dominance early in the game, pitching a shutout victory that featured six strikeouts. Harris-Thorpe went 2-of-3 at the plate, posting a pair of RBI's and scoring three runs. Cripps also posted a pair of RBI's.

Salt Lake will now await the announcement of the tournament field for the NJCAA National Tournament. The tourney, which was long hosted in St. George, will be played in Yuma, Ariz., with a scheduled start of May 25.

Recognizing SLCC's 2025 Distinguished Faculty Lecturer Andrew Vogt, PhD Associate Professor, Engineering

The Distinguished Faculty Lecturer is a recognition of quality work by one of Salt Lake Community College’s full-time faculty and a charge to develop that work over an academic year into a public presentation. A committee chosen by the Associate Provost for Learning Advancement selects the faculty lecturer each year. The lecture takes place in the spring. Distinguished Faculty Lecturer Andrew Vogt, PhD Associate Professor, Engineering Dr. Andrew Vogt’s teaching philosophy is guided by two principles, curiosity and efficiency.  “Curiosity leads us to study a topic and allows us to really understand the ins and outs of research, while efficiency is all about sustainability,” he says. Andrew describes curiosity as a pure, open-minded impulse to explore, such as the ease with which children learn new concepts with virtually no instruction. Efficiency adds maturity to that childlike impulse, creating structures and pathways for accomplishment.  Andrew’s work has alwa...
