The Show Must Go On - Online

Student Leah Windley's winning poster

This year’s SLCC Student Art Showcase is still on – online, that is. Thanks to the efforts of Virag White, assistant professor of graphic design, and others, the contest was juried, judged and awards were made – all online.

Leah Windley’s poster, pictured above, was chosen as the winner of the 2020 SLCC Student Art Showcase Poster Design Contest. Graphic design assistant professor Kerry Gonzales organized the poster contest prior to the Showcase, and judging was done by full-time and adjunct faculty in the Visual Art & Design department.

The Showcase is organized by the Student Art Showcase Committee, chaired this year by White and made up of full-time faculty in the VAD department. The 2020 show has a total of 261 juried art pieces representing eight submission categories. The categories range from digital to traditional mediums, 2D and 3D art. This year a total of 30 awards were given.

Every spring semester for more than 35 years, the Visual Art & Design faculty organizes the Art Showcase to display the talent of their students. This show has grown into a prestigious exhibit, with numerous submission categories. Traditionally the art show has been displayed at the South City Campus Multipurpose Room. Due to this year's unusual circumstances, the Showcase moved to a virtual gallery.

The six independent judges for the Showcase were invited from the working artist community and represented a wide range of art disciplines. Additionally, the President and the Dean of School of Arts, Communication & Media chose their award-winning pieces as well.

A short list of award winners includes: Erica Thurston (President’s Award), Ethan Hanna (Dean’s Award), Paola Acanzo (Judges Choice Award) and Rebecca Stephens (INK Group Award). There were 24 Award of Excellence prizes this year.

Recognizing SLCC's 2025 Distinguished Faculty Lecturer Andrew Vogt, PhD Associate Professor, Engineering

The Distinguished Faculty Lecturer is a recognition of quality work by one of Salt Lake Community College’s full-time faculty and a charge to develop that work over an academic year into a public presentation. A committee chosen by the Associate Provost for Learning Advancement selects the faculty lecturer each year. The lecture takes place in the spring. Distinguished Faculty Lecturer Andrew Vogt, PhD Associate Professor, Engineering Dr. Andrew Vogt’s teaching philosophy is guided by two principles, curiosity and efficiency.  “Curiosity leads us to study a topic and allows us to really understand the ins and outs of research, while efficiency is all about sustainability,” he says. Andrew describes curiosity as a pure, open-minded impulse to explore, such as the ease with which children learn new concepts with virtually no instruction. Efficiency adds maturity to that childlike impulse, creating structures and pathways for accomplishment.  Andrew’s work has alwa...
