Salt Lake Community College (SLCC) and the University of Utah (U of U) held their annual Transfer Summit at SLCC on March 22, 2024 to foster the transfer process between the two institutions. SLCC transfer students represent more than 40% of all transfer students to the U of U, and once there, these students graduate at five to six percent higher completion rates than the U’s general transfer population.
“We are trying to get these students thinking about the U at the beginning of their SLCC journey, so they have a very clear pathway,” said SLCC President Deneece Huftalin in a video welcome. “From an articulation perspective, we are doing some great things. We have over 50 major-specific articulation agreements in place.”
In the last year SLCC has completed or revised agreements for programs such as Nursing, Asian Studies, Language and Cultural Studies, Writing Studies, Hospitality, and Graphic Communication. Collaborations between the two schools are in the works right now to develop articulation agreements in Engineering and Business.
Transfer pathways between the two institutions, allow students to seamlessly transfer from their associate’s degree programs to their bachelor’s degree programs at the U of U without losing credits.
The U of U’s Office of Transfer Student Success has grown to support students transferring to the school and provide weekly workshops for new transfer students to connect them to high impact programs such as internships and undergraduate research.
One example of success is this spring, 90 SLCC transfer student will join the U of U’s Crimson Transfer Honors Society, a registered student organization on campus that is exclusively for high-achieving transfer students.
One of the most innovative collaborations between SLCC and the U of U is the opening of the new Herriman campus last fall, which allows for SLCC students to start and complete their associate’s degree and then continue to earn their U of U bachelor’s degree at the same location.
“We continue to be excited about Herriman…It is such a unique opportunity to collaborate and blur the boundaries between our two organizations. It is exciting that over 700 students are already taking classes [at Herriman]. I only foresee this continuing to grow,” said U of U President Taylor Randall in a video welcome.
SLCC student Luisana Zambrano sat on a panel with other students to share their experiences thus far in the transfer process and to share what was helpful.
“Don’t wait until the last minute, do everything you can in advance, like applying to the U of U, just in case something comes up or the transition involves more than you thought,” said Luisana, who will transfer to the U of U next fall after earning her associate’s degree in Journalism and Digital Media. She also suggested reaching out to the U of U’s Transfer Student Center if you have any questions or something on the website is confusing. She also added, “Talk to your SLCC advisor and make sure the classes you are taking will transfer to the University.”
