SLCC solar tech students vie for KRCL-FM 90.9 Radio power project

Salt Lake Community College students of solar design will compete Tuesday, June 2, 6 p.m., at KRCL-FM 90.9 to see which of four SLCC teams will help KRCL become Utah’s first radio station powered completely by renewable energy. “We’re always asking listeners to do what they can for the environment and now, with this project, it’s our turn to walk that walk,” said KRCL General Manager Vicki Mann, who noted the project will be funded in part by grants from UCAIR and Rocky Mountain Power. However, she said, “this is no academic exercise; it’s a real-world project that we expect will reduce, if not eliminate, KRCL’s carbon footprint.” Using equal grant-funded budgets, the student teams will have 15 minutes each to present their ideas Tuesday evening. KRCL will select the winning design, then turn the project over to Brok Thayn of Hunt Electric to build with students in his SLCC solar design class. The Hunt Electric team has been involved from day one in providing industry guidance...

Writing a Paper? Save time with citation generators!

Gone are the days of typing references into a specified format such as MLA, APA, Chicago or CSE. This procedure once sapped hours of precious time—usually in the final frenetic hours of the semester. Today, we have citation generators and computer programs that format your references automatically. You can simply copy and paste properly formatted citations into your papers and voila! Here are three ways to do it: 1. Word Processor Citation Generators Word-processing programs such as Microsoft Word 2007 and 2010 (see the References tab) have options for formatting your bibliography in MLA, APA, or Chicago style if you’ve already typed them or copied them from different sources. Although this isn’t the fastest or most elegant option, it beats the old method of formatting each reference by hand. Maybe you say, "Wait! I type and save my papers in the cloud." If that’s the case, word processors such as Google Docs provide the free EasyBib add-on. 2. Library Da...

SLCC student wins humanitarian award, $5,000 scholarship

Salt Lake Community College student Israel Santana recently received the 2015 Youthlinc Utah Young Humanitarian Award and a $5,000 scholarship through the sponsoring nonprofit Youthlinc, the largest service-based scholarship program in the state. Israel Santana The award recognizes Santana’s involvement for the past six years with the Mestizo Arts & Activism Collective (MAA), helping to empower youth on Salt Lake City’s west side to become community leaders. In high school he used poetry and photography at MAA to share his experiences growing up a west sider, where drug and gang activity in his community could have steered Santana from his academic path. “If it hadn’t been for the Mestizo Arts and Activism Collective, I would have either been in prison or dead,” he said. As a college student he has been mentoring younger students about the value of education. Santana is quoted on the Youthlinc website saying, “My leadership in Salt Lake City has focused on empowering you...

SLCC Facilities names outstanding staffer

Gordon Tallis has been awarded the Facilities Division Outstanding Employee for January-June, 2015. Gordon Tallis His fellow employees wrote about Tallis: " Gordon is the facilities’ glue.  He works hard, stays late or does two shifts when others don’t come to work.  He seems to be everywhere.  He is funny, dependable and wise.  He is like a “mother hen” when it comes to the cleanliness of our work environment and he makes sure not to interrupt students in their classrooms.  His motivation seems to come from within.  He is certainly deserving of this award."
