A large number of Salt Lake Community College student-athletes received individual recognition on a national scale for their academic prowess earlier this week.   In its annual All-Academic list, the NJCAA honored 20 SLCC student-athletes for their academic success during the 2018-19 academic year. In order to be considered for the list, a student-athlete had to have a minimum of a 3.60 cumulative GPA.   Salt Lake had three student-athletes make the NJCAA's First Team, which requires a perfect 4.0 GPA. Those student-athletes were spread across three different teams as   Colton Moore   (baseball),   Holland Vande Merwe   (volleyball) and Nikole Oliver (women's soccer) all made the list.   The Bruins had five student-athletes earn NJCAA All-Academic Second-Team honors, fulfilling the requirement of a GPA from 3.80-3.99. The Association of American Colleges and Universities (AAC&U) announced Salt Lake Community College is among the twenty institutions selected to participate in a new two-year project,  Strengthening Guided Pathways and Career Success by Ensuring Students Are Learning . The Guided Pathways project is designed to build institutional capacity to ensure students are learning. “AAC&U is thrilled to partner with the selected Guided Pathways institutions to promote student success and demonstrate the ways in which community colleges are vital to our nation’s strength—serving as engines of discovery, innovation, and social mobility,” said AAC&U President Lynn Pasquerella. The first step in the grant process for SLCC was to send a team to the AAC&U Summer Institute on High-Impact Practices, held this summer at Villanova University. Kaci Black serves one up in the sand. It’s Chucky Pham’s fifth time taking a volleyball course at Salt Lake Community College. With her second time taking the “sand” version of the class, it’s the seventh go at volleyball for Naomi Garrow. Even the blowing sands on a windy summer day don’t discourage the pair from at least trying to tough it out sans their shoes. “I just love volleyball,” says Pham, 24, of Taylorsville. “It’s such a fun sport.” He earned his associate’s degree from SLCC a few years ago and is currently pursuing a four-year degree to become a math teacher. Garrow, 21, graduated in May from SLCC with a degree in political science and works at the Utah State Capitol during the legislative session – her first job there was through an internship she landed while at SLCC. “It’s just a good break from everyday classes,” says the future law student.
