SLCC's Prison Education Program Recognizes 31 New Graduates with Associate’s Degrees

Over 30 students graduated from Salt Lake Community College’s (SLCC) Prison Education Program at the Utah State Correctional Facility on May 13. Thirty-one received an associate’s degree, most in General Studies, a few in Anthropology and Criminal Justice. One graduate earned two  Four of the graduates spoke to a small audience about how earning an associate’s degree has changed their lives. Becky Golly, shared her personal story of being a single mom, working three jobs, and becoming addicted to drugs. When she was sentenced to prison, she felt hopeless and believed her life was over. Then in 2019, some fellow inmates encouraged her to take a class, and to stick with it—it had been 27 years since she graduated from high school.   “The skills, certificates, and degrees I’ve received over the last six years have changed my future in ways I could never have dreamed. The Center for Prior Learning Receives an Honorable Mention

Today, SLCC's Credit for Prior Learning department received an Honorable Mention from the  Council for Adult and Experiential Learning (CAEL ) and the  Western Interstate Commission for Higher Education  for its intentional approach and for expanding student options to receive credit for prior learning.  Credit for Prior Learning (CPL)  allows students to obtain college credit for knowledge and skills acquired outside of the traditional academic environment. This is exceptionally beneficial for adult learners, who, according to CAEL, have a 17% higher chance of graduating compared to those adults who don’t earn credits through prior learning programs. The CPL department at SLCC was created in 2020 and since then the volume of students served has grown as the department continues to expand.   Spring has arrived at SLCC and t he Facilities Department 's annual Beautification Day provides a fantastic opportunity for folks to connect and collaborate while strengthening and improving the SLCC community. SALT LAKE CITY, May 3, 2024—Today, Salt Lake Community College proudly celebrated the achievements of more than 3000 graduates during its 2024 Commencement Ceremony at the Maverik Center in West Valley City.  SLCC’s Class of 2024 comprises 3,169 students, including 1,429 first-generation college students and 164 military veterans. Graduates range in age from 16 to 67, and most earned degrees are from the school’s general studies and general education programs followed by business, nursing, and psychology. “At its best, college helps us understand ourselves, make sense of the world around us, and challenges us to use our knowledge and skills to strengthen our communities,” said SLCC President Deneece G. Commencement 2024: Graduation Morning Vibes

On a crisp, spring morning outside the Maverick Center, more than 3,000 Salt Lake Community College (SLCC) students—decked in black robes and a variety of colorful cords, sashes, and cultural regalia—prepared to stream into the center for the College’s 2024 Commencement. Among them were 1,429 first-generation students, 164 Veterans, and soon-to-be graduates that ranged in age from 16 to 67.    We caught up with some of the students below to see how they were feeling, how was their time at SLCC, and what’s next.  Paola Leyva Computer Science   “It feels great to be here. Finally.   Lexus Lindeman SLCC 2024 Provost Graduates of Excellence A chilly, overcast Friday morning did not dull the bright smile, colorful cap and decorated regalia Lexus Lindenman wore to the SLCC commencement at the Maverick Center. A big nervous smile full of excitement was how Lexus greeted her other peers and Graduates of Excellence , who, just like her, earned the prestigious distinction.  Lexus's decorated cap "I must execute this procession flawlessly; I cannot stumble, for I am representing all of us," Lexus declared, adjusting her regalia. The presence of her parents and siblings, whom she often assists with her two disabled siblings, added an emotional layer to this moment. Lexus's commitment to her family, often traveling out of state to support them, is a testament to her resilience and determination.  Choosing not to elaborate on the profound impact of this graduation on her and her family, Lexus expressed deep gratitude for her husband and parents.
