We are delighted and extremely grateful for the United States Supreme Court’s decision that allows the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program to continue. DACA provides work permits and deportation protection for nearly 700,000 individuals who migrated to the U.S. as children. Today’s ruling means the more than 550 DACA registered students at SLCC — nearly half of all DACA-registered college students in Utah — can continue to pursue employment and education without fear of deportation. As Utah’s most diverse college, we are proud to reaffirm our ongoing support for all undocumented students. Our goal has always been to support the success of everyone attending SLCC, whether or not they are impacted by DACA, and connect them with educational and other services they need to achieve their dreams. Parts of Salt Lake Community College are slowly beginning to reopen during the COVID-19 pandemic, ushering in a "new normal" in a community that normally thrives on unfettered access to the environment and resources that make SLCC one of the top community colleges in the nation. Signs of Life is a series that shines a light on stops along the long road back to normal operations.   First it was the migraine headaches that put off Marlee McKean’s college career.   Marlee had struggled with the debilitating headaches in high school. Stress sometimes causes them, she says. When she started at a four-year school, the new environment and huge class sizes were too much for her. She tried working with advisors at the school, but modifications to her schedule that might have allowed her to continue were not available. SLCC volleyball player Kenadee Christensen The thud of volleyballs being hit echoed through the big gym. That sounded normal. But there were no high fives. No hugs for great plays. Smiles from coaches were hidden behind masks.   This was the look and feel during a pandemic of the annual camps in June that the Salt Lake Community College volleyball team holds for area eighth grade and freshman players.
