SLCC Opens New Plastics Lab

Salt Lake Community College has opened a new Plastics Lab at its Meadowbrook Campus. A boon to both students and local manufactures in the Plastics Injection Molding industry.

SLCC’s new lab will contain the newest equipment in the industry, including a RoboShot 110-ton Injection Molding Machine that was donated by BD Medical, an objet photo-polymer 3-D Printer, and a steel negative part molddonated by BARD Access Systems.

“We depend on industry support in all these areas to make this program a success,” said Mark Poole, SLCC Corporate Solutions director.  “We are very grateful for the high quality of these donations. Cooperation between industry and academia benefits all involved, and all of us at SLCC will work to improve the Plastics Injection Molding workforce and industry.”

With the addition of the Objet 3-D printer and other machining and milling equipment, the Plastic lab now takes products from the concept to the prototype to the production stage. As a result, students and companies can use the facility to:
  • design a product using CAD software
  • print a prototype of the product on the Objet 3-D printer
  • print a negative mold of the product on the Objet 3-D printer
  • manufacture a small-number run of the product on the plastics injection machine
  • mill a final version of the mold in steel

Recognizing SLCC's 2025 Distinguished Faculty Lecturer Andrew Vogt, PhD Associate Professor, Engineering

The Distinguished Faculty Lecturer is a recognition of quality work by one of Salt Lake Community College’s full-time faculty and a charge to develop that work over an academic year into a public presentation. A committee chosen by the Associate Provost for Learning Advancement selects the faculty lecturer each year. The lecture takes place in the spring. Distinguished Faculty Lecturer Andrew Vogt, PhD Associate Professor, Engineering Dr. Andrew Vogt’s teaching philosophy is guided by two principles, curiosity and efficiency.  “Curiosity leads us to study a topic and allows us to really understand the ins and outs of research, while efficiency is all about sustainability,” he says. Andrew describes curiosity as a pure, open-minded impulse to explore, such as the ease with which children learn new concepts with virtually no instruction. Efficiency adds maturity to that childlike impulse, creating structures and pathways for accomplishment.  Andrew’s work has alwa...
