Salt Lake Community
College is in the process of improving a large area east of the Student Center
on the Taylorsville Redwood Campus to be more inviting to students, staff and
faculty at SLCC and the surrounding community. Crews have been working
throughout the summer and will continue shaping the reimagined “quad” area in a
manner designed to bring more students together while connecting them with
nature. It’s expected to be complete by the end of October.
An area of the
quad called “The Realm” compliments the existing fountain with natural and manmade
walkways, rock gardens and quasi forest, meadow and desert areas. The spaces
are being laid out to accommodate study, socializing, collaboration, teaching
and reflection. The design takes advantage of the solar solstices to organize
the various design features. Xeriscape design principles and water-wise plants
are also in keeping with SLCC’s mission, vision and values.
