Meet Our Students: Shari-Fa Harrigan

Shari-Fa Harrigan

Age: 24

Residence: Taylorsville

From: Ogden, Utah, raised in St. Thomas, U.S Virgin Islands

Current major: Hospitality Management. I chose this major because I am passionate about helping others and making them feel comfortable and at home. I also chose this major because I would like to explore the wedding planning industry as well.

Other degrees/certificates: Received Event and Meeting Planner Certificate Fall 2020.

Academic goals: My academic goals are to successfully complete my Hospitality Management degree with a 4.0 GPA.

Dream job: Become a successful Wedding and Event Planner so that I can help the bride and groom celebrate their big day. Planning weddings can be stressful, so if I can help relieve some stress, I am happy to assist.

Plan B: Become a Manager or a General Manager of a hotel.

Why are you pursuing a higher education: I am pursing a higher education to be successful in life and follow my dreams. My goal is to network and get in touch with well-known and experienced wedding/event planners.

Why SLCC: SLCC was not my first choice, I applied to the college because my mother encouraged me to and thought it would be a good start for me. Since then, I am happy with the decision I made.

What motivates you or inspires you: I have a great support system such as friends, family and most importantly God, who motivates me and pushes me to keep going even when things get tough.

Important life or career lessons so far: I have learned to be more responsible with my time management, money and learning how to be a leader in life while learning as I grow.

What is the best advice you have been given or that you give others: I always encourage others to make time for themselves. It’s easy to get caught up in saying yes to helping others which is great, but sometimes people become too dependent on you. I also advise other students who take a load of classes each semester with no breaks in between that it’s ok to go at your own pace. Sometimes there is too much pressure for students to finish college in a hurry, but I don’t think anyone should determine or measure anyone else’s success.

Family: My mother Gina Alfred, my father K-Shawn Harrigan, my west Indian grandparents Sharimae Lewis and Winston Harrigan and my little brother Shawn Harrigan.

Hobbies: Spending time with friends, exploring new restaurants and shopping.

Recognizing SLCC's 2025 Distinguished Faculty Lecturer Andrew Vogt, PhD Associate Professor, Engineering

The Distinguished Faculty Lecturer is a recognition of quality work by one of Salt Lake Community College’s full-time faculty and a charge to develop that work over an academic year into a public presentation. A committee chosen by the Associate Provost for Learning Advancement selects the faculty lecturer each year. The lecture takes place in the spring. Distinguished Faculty Lecturer Andrew Vogt, PhD Associate Professor, Engineering Dr. Andrew Vogt’s teaching philosophy is guided by two principles, curiosity and efficiency.  “Curiosity leads us to study a topic and allows us to really understand the ins and outs of research, while efficiency is all about sustainability,” he says. Andrew describes curiosity as a pure, open-minded impulse to explore, such as the ease with which children learn new concepts with virtually no instruction. Efficiency adds maturity to that childlike impulse, creating structures and pathways for accomplishment.  Andrew’s work has alwa...
