Movie Premiere Paired with Beehive Art Exhibition Closing Night

The Salt Lake Community College School of Arts, Communication Media is sponsoring a double dose of entertainment Sept. 3 with a new movie premiering for the first time in Utah, featuring an artist who is part of an exhibition that is closing the same night.

The film Thuggin’ A New Generation, directed by Downy Doxey-Marshall, features Utah artist and poet MönSr Yusef. In his art and in the film, Yusef explores many themes from his life on the streets that inspire hope of a unified humanity. He uses “Thuggin’” to describe people who accept what and who they are, allowing nothing and no one to prevent them from accomplishing their goals. His artistic process uses poetry and images of pop culture, fashion and design to explore the Thuggin’ generation. The film will be shown in SLCC’s Grand Theatre.

Yusef is also one of several artists featured in the so-called New Beehive Exhibition, presented by the Utah Division of Arts & Museums. The exhibition brings together the work of 30 Utah-based artists who exemplify the diversity of artistic expression in visual media and craft found statewide. Artists were invited to create a unique artwork employing the beehive and associated imagery as a concept, motif or metaphor. The resulting pieces are a collection of deeply personal interpretations of what it means to be a resident of the Beehive State, Utah for those who don’t know, in the 21st Century. The Grand Beehive was a 1980 exhibition that explored representations of the beehive symbol in various aspects of Utah culture.

Please note, SLCC officials and event organizers strongly recommend using a face covering and to practice social distancing while in attendance at both events.

Access to the Beehive Exhibition Sept. 3, its closing night, will begin at 7 a.m. and close at 10 p.m. at SLCC’s George S. & Delores Doré Eccles Gallery.

For the film, there will be a reception 6-7 p.m. in the Edna Runswick Taylor Foyer outside of the gallery, followed immediately by its premiere inside the theatre. The Grand Theatre and Eccles Gallery are located on SLCC’s South City Campus at 1575 South State Street, Salt Lake City. HB 261 and HB 257 Frequently Asked Questions

Dear Faculty, Staff and Students: The Utah Legislature recently passed two bills that significantly impact higher education:  HB 261  Equal Opportunity Initiatives and HB  257  Sex-Based Designations for Privacy, Anti-Bullying, and Women’s Opportunities. Salt Lake Community College is deeply committed to our students, faculty, and staff. We strive to be a place where all are welcomed and respected. While there are many unknowns about the ultimate effect these bills will have on some student and staff support programs, be assured that SLCC will maintain an environment where all can find success and feel a sense of belonging. In the coming months, college leadership will work to gain clarity and determine the changes necessary for legislative compliance. We will also share this information as it becomes available.  We realize that during this time, some in our college community may feel unsettled and stressed. We encourage you to make use of available SLCC resources designed to support y
