College Board of Trustees Announces Two New Members

Salt Lake Community College is pleased to welcome Sunny Washington and Lindsay Simons to the school’s Board of Trustees. Washington will serve a four-year term replacing former board member Linda Luchetti, and Simons joins the board for a one-year term as president of SLCC’s Student Association.

Washington brings to SLCC over 20 years of experience working in the educational technology industry. She is a public policy expert in Utah’s start-up and tech community and serves as the public policy chair of Silicon Slopes Commons. She also worked for Certiport from 2001 to 2009, where she helped bring digital literacy certification programs to K-12 institutions in over 80 countries. Washington has also worked for the educational learning management system, Canvas. Since 2014 she has led her own company, called Because Learning, which distributes space experiments and STEM education curriculum to institutions around the globe. Outside of work, she is an important voice for LGBTQ civil rights and serves as a board member of Equality Utah.

“I'm thrilled to serve on the Board of Trustees at SLCC,” said Washington. “Most of my career has been focused on the education market, and I love working with administration, faculty and students. SLCC serves as an important organization for the growth of Utah's economy, and I'm honored to be a part of the board.”

Simons is SLCC’s Student Association president, a first-generation student and health sciences major. Simons is a mother of four children and a foster parent originally from Newport Beach, Calif. Her goals are to help everyone at SLCC figure out where they fit in and to highlight the student resources available at the college. She also wants to increase student involvement in on-campus activities.

“I think I can bring a unique perspective to the board as a returning student and a busy parent,” said Simons about her role as the student representative on the Board of Trustees.

The Center for Prior Learning Receives an Honorable Mention

Today, SLCC's Credit for Prior Learning department received an Honorable Mention from the Council for Adult and Experiential Learning (CAEL ) and the Western Interstate Commission for Higher Education for its intentional approach and for expanding student options to receive credit for prior learning. Credit for Prior Learning (CPL) allows students to obtain college credit for knowledge and skills acquired outside of the traditional academic environment. This is exceptionally beneficial for adult learners, who, according to CAEL, have a 17% higher chance of graduating compared to those adults who don’t earn credits through prior learning programs. The CPL department at SLCC was created in 2020 and since then the volume of students served has grown as the department continues to expand. Board of Higher Ed names Gregory F. Peterson 9th SLCC President

The Utah Board of Higher Education unanimously selected Gregory F. Peterson, Ed.D., as the ninth president of Salt Lake Community College today, following an extensive national search. Peterson will assume the position on July 1, 2024, and succeeds Deneece G. Huftalin, who served as president from 2014-2024. “I’m humbled by the opportunity to serve as Salt Lake Community College’s next president, and I look forward to reinforcing SLCC’s commitment to providing educational pathways for transfer and workforce that improve the lives of every member of our community,” Peterson said. “SLCC has an amazing future ahead, and I couldn’t be prouder to be a part of that journey.” As part of its delegated duties and responsibilities, the SLCC Board of Trustees named an 11-member committee in December 2023 to conduct a national search for the next president of SLCC.
