Heads Shaved, 'Lives Saved' with Fundraising Goal Met

Sure, the shaving of the heads was fun, but the cause for the recent livestreamed close cuts is no laughing matter.

The Salt Lake Community College Gender and Sexuality Student Resource Center set a goal of raising $5,000 for the new GSSRC Fund by June to establish what its organizers say are “lifesaving” resources and support for SLCC students.

GSSRC Coordinator Peter Moosman said he would bump up the fundraising deadline to the end of April by offering to shave his head if that goal was reached. Sydney Cahoon, an administrative assistant in the SLCC Office of Admissions, also offered up their magnificent mane to sweeten the deal. Money raised, the clippers came out May 4, and the hair came off.

“We wanted to offer some kind of dramatic incentive to help motivate people to give,” Moosman said. “If I was willing to give up my signature spike, and Syd their long locks, I was hoping others would be willing to give up some money for these lifesaving services and resources.”

The fund is intended to support SLCC students in a variety of ways, including helping to pay for legal name and gender marker changes or for mental health counseling visits at SLCC. Moosman said the fund will be ongoing and that people can donate anytime, including setting up a monthly payment program.

Moosman and Cahoon gave event attendees a turn at the scissors and clippers, and they’re happy to report there were no injuries – only the new sensation of a slight chill atop their closely cropped heads.

SLCC Business School is Utah’s First to be Named Exclusively After a Woman

Salt Lake Community College (SLCC) proudly announces a partnership with the Larry H. & Gail Miller Family Foundation to modernize its Business Building and transform its School of Business. The improvements are made possible through a generous $10 million gift from the Miller Family Foundation and Gail Miller, the largest-ever single cash donation received by the college.  SLCC is renaming its Business Building the Larry H. & Gail Miller Family Business Building in honor of the Miller family’s legacy and contributions to the community. The business school will be named the Gail Miller School of Business in recognition of the strong business acumen Gail Miller displays as a community leader and as the owner and immediate past chair of the Larry H. Miller Company. This name change will make SLCC home to the only business school in Utah and one of only a few in the country to be named exclusively after a woman.  “We are deeply humbled by the generosity of Gail and the Miller fam
