College Receives Mini-Grant to Improve Lactation Space

Salt Lake Community College’s Facilities Services staff recently installed artwork in the Huval Student Center’s Lactation Space, thanks to the Worksite Mini-Grant for Lactation Accommodations. The grant from the Utah Department of Health’s HEAL program intends to alleviate any financial constraints that may prevent an organization from creating or improving its lactation spaces.

Caleb Prusso applied for the grant after learning about it from Campus and Site Services Director Shannon McWilliams. As the College’s Facilities assistant planner, Caleb works with the Interior Design, Architecture and Construction Management teams to select and implement furnishings for all College campuses.

The team opted to use the grant funds to improve the existing lactation space in the Huval Student Center with untitled artwork by local artist Aïsha Lehmann. “Selecting artwork, particularly by a Utah artist, seemed to align with the College’s culture of fostering talent and innovation,” Caleb says. The piece is made up of four separate panels and portrays a woman sitting in a chair with only her face, elbows, knees and feet visible. “The subject might appear sympathetic to someone juggling work and school while caring for a baby,” Caleb says.

The Planning & Design team hopes to add artwork and décor to all the College’s lactation spaces and welcomes any input or feedback.

About SLCC Lactation Spaces

SLCC’s lactation spaces are available for all students, employees, or visitors at the Redwood, Jordan, Miller, South City, Wespointe and West Valley campuses. In addition, those visiting the Herriman, Library Square and Meadowbrook campuses can call the HR Leave Coordinator for arrangements at 801-957-4722.

SLCC Alumnus and U.S. Diplomat to Speak at 2025 Commencement

Salt Lake Community College’s 2025 Commencement speaker Branigan Knowlton will share his perspectives drawn from a 12-year career as a Foreign Service Officer with the U.S. Department of State. In serving his country, Knowlton has honed his foreign relations and diplomacy skills in Hong Kong, Mexico, Colombia and Italy. Knowlton is also a proud Salt Lake Community College (SLCC) alumnus (2002).     Knowlton currently serves at the U.S. Embassy in Rome. Recognizing SLCC's 2025 Distinguished Faculty Lecturer Andrew Vogt, PhD Associate Professor, Engineering

The Distinguished Faculty Lecturer is a recognition of quality work by one of Salt Lake Community College’s full-time faculty and a charge to develop that work over an academic year into a public presentation. A committee chosen by the Associate Provost for Learning Advancement selects the faculty lecturer each year. The lecture takes place in the spring.
