What is a typical day or week like for you?
In my professional role, a typical week is characterized by a dynamic and ever-changing schedule. Each day presents unique challenges and tasks as I oversee the South Region within Admissions, which has experienced significant expansion. My office at the Herriman Campus provides an excellent work environment.

My responsibilities encompass a wide range of duties within admissions and concurrent enrollment. A typical day might involve tasks such as responding to emails, assisting walk-in visitors, providing concurrent enrollment advising, and even traveling between various schools to participate in events. This variety keeps my role engaging and ensures that no two days are identical

What are the most challenging aspects of your job?
The most challenging aspect of my role as an A3, especially as someone relatively new to the position, is ensuring that the schools we have recently expanded into are fully aware of the extensive resources we provide. Our institution offers valuable resources for high school students, including concurrent enrollment opportunities, and it's crucial that we effectively communicate this to schools and students alike.

As part of my team's objectives, I'm working towards establishing strong relationships with these schools, with the goal of showcasing the wide array of resources that Salt Lake Community College has to offer. This is particularly important for schools in close proximity to our new Herriman campus location. Bridging this awareness gap and ensuring that our resources are well-utilized is a key challenge that I am dedicated to addressing in my role.

What rewards come with your job?
The most rewarding aspect of my job is the opportunity to positively impact students' lives and provide them with valuable support. Many of the students we serve in the South Region recruitment team are high school-based, and it brings me immense satisfaction to know that I can make their educational journey a bit smoother.

One of the most fulfilling moments for me is when I assist a student in creating a concurrent enrollment plan or help them better understand the intricacies of concurrent enrollment. Witnessing the transformation in their attitude, from initial confusion and anxiety to leaving my office with a clear understanding of their next steps, whether it's transitioning into a traditional college experience or pursuing concurrent enrollment, is truly rewarding.

I take great pride in my role and in serving those who seek assistance in our admissions process. Being able to directly contribute to a student's educational path and witnessing the positive impact I can make is one of the many rewards of working in admissions, and I'm grateful to experience it firsthand.

Who or what inspires you at work or in life and why?
I find inspiration in my past self and the personal journey I've undertaken. The reason for this is the culmination of experiences I've encountered and the significant progress I've made along the way. I value the challenges and triumphs that have shaped me into the person I am today, and I am grateful for the individuals who have crossed paths with me, witnessed my growth, and provided support throughout my journey.

What truly motivates me is the contemplation of life's 'what ifs.' I envision the best possible outcomes and set my sights on achieving them. While inspiration may not always be readily available, when it strikes, I fully commit myself to the pursuit of my goals and aspirations. Reflecting on my personal journey, along with the potential for positive change and growth, serves as a constant source of inspiration, propelling me forward in both my work and life.

Tell us something about yourself from outside of your SLCC life.
Hobbies/interests:
Outside of my professional life at SLCC, I have a variety of hobbies and interests that I enjoy. I have a passion for playing volleyball, which not only keeps me active but also allows me to engage in team sports and develop camaraderie with others.

One of my favorite pastimes is exploring the culinary world. I have a particular affinity for cooking, and when I'm in the kitchen, I often find myself pretending I have my own cooking show, experimenting with new recipes, and enjoying the creative process of preparing meals.

Additionally, I find solace in spending time outdoors, particularly walking on trails. It's a wonderful way for me to connect with nature and clear my mind.

Favorite/unique thing about Herriman Campus?
My favorite aspect of the Herriman Campus would have to be my office space. It may seem simple, but I find it essential in creating a productive and comfortable environment that allows me to excel in my everyday responsibilities. The ability to shape my workspace to suit my needs and preferences has been a valuable asset in ensuring that I can efficiently serve our students and colleagues. It's a small detail, but it contributes significantly to my overall work experience and helps me stay motivated and focused

Favorite place at Herriman campus?
My favorite place at the Herriman campus is undoubtedly the balcony on the 3rd floor. The reason for this choice is the breathtaking views it offers of the surrounding area. It provides a unique vantage point to appreciate the natural beauty and surroundings of the campus.

What makes it even more special is that it's a shared space where students, staff, and faculty can come together to work, socialize, or simply unwind while enjoying these picturesque vistas. This sense of community and the opportunity for peaceful reflection against the backdrop of such stunning scenery make it a truly special and cherished spot-on campus.

SLCC Business School is Utah’s First to be Named Exclusively After a Woman

Salt Lake Community College (SLCC) proudly announces a partnership with the Larry H. & Gail Miller Family Foundation to modernize its Business Building and transform its School of Business. The improvements are made possible through a generous $10 million gift from the Miller Family Foundation and Gail Miller, the largest-ever single cash donation received by the college.  SLCC is renaming its Business Building the Larry H. & Gail Miller Family Business Building in honor of the Miller family’s legacy and contributions to the community. The business school will be named the Gail Miller School of Business in recognition of the strong business acumen Gail Miller displays as a community leader and as the owner and immediate past chair of the Larry H. Miller Company. This name change will make SLCC home to the only business school in Utah and one of only a few in the country to be named exclusively after a woman.  “We are deeply humbled by the generosity of Gail and the Miller fam
