The Utah Board of Higher Education unanimously selected Gregory F. Peterson, Ed.D., as the ninth president of Salt Lake Community College today, following an extensive national search. Peterson will assume the position on July 1, 2024, and succeeds Deneece G. Huftalin, who served as president from 2014-2024.   “I’m humbled by the opportunity to serve as Salt Lake Community College’s next president, and I look forward to reinforcing SLCC’s commitment to providing educational pathways for transfer and workforce that improve the lives of every member of our community,” Peterson said. “SLCC has an amazing future ahead, and I couldn’t be prouder to be a part of that journey.”   As part of its delegated duties and responsibilities, the SLCC Board of Trustees named an  11-member committee  in December 2023 to conduct a national search for the next president of SLCC. Located in the northeast corner, o n t he first floor of the Student Center at Taylorsville Redwood Campus , the area provides a welcoming environment for all students to networ k and learn . The newly renovated space is one of three centers managed by the Student Engagement, Experience and Achievement O ffice (SEEA) , formally known as the Office of Diversity and Multicultural Affairs (ODMA) . The new name reflects SEEA’s mission to ensure that all students, regardless of their background, have access to the services and enhanced programming to help them succeed in school .     The  The  Utah State University (USU) and Salt Lake Community College (SLCC) have created a transfer agreement aimed at giving fashion and design students opportunities to pursue further education and careers in the growing outdoor industry. The new transfer agreement allows students who complete two years at SLCC’s Fashion Institute to apply to USU’s Outdoor Product Design and Development (OPDD) program after submitting a portfolio and being accepted to the program. Students attending USU must also submit portfolios and be formally accepted into the program. SLCC students who are accepted can then graduate with a bachelor’s degree after two years of work in OPDD.   “When you start looking at the fashion and design industry, there are so many connections and overlaps,” said Amber Williams, professional practice assistant professor for USU’s OPDD program. “We should absolutely be working together.   Salt Lake Community College Fashion Institute ’s annual fashion show will showcase runway models displaying fashion designed by the institute’s graduating seniors. A variety of clothing will be modeled, including women’s and men’s wear, and gender-fluid clothing.   There will also be mannequins displaying student-designed “trashion” wear, which is upcycle, recycled, and repurposed clothing. The purpose of this display is to bring attention to the need for sustainable clothing; the fashion industry is one of the world’s largest polluters.  Examples of trashion wear include the following: Recyclable —recovering fiber, yarn, or fabric and reprocessing the material into new, useful products. Repurposed —clothing that are worn out or damaged e.g., old t-shirts turned into cleaning rags, jeans that are made into tote bags, and sweaters transformed into cozy pillow covers.   Public forums with finalists to be held April 24; presidential appointment expected April 26   After an extensive national search, the Salt Lake Community College Presidential Search Committee has recommended three finalists to the Utah Board of Higher Education for the position of president: Joshua D. Baker, Ph.D.; Dean G. McCurdy, Ph.D.; and Gregory F.
