Upcoming: Student-Designers Model Clothing at SLCC's 2024 Fashion Show

Salt Lake Community College Fashion Institute’s annual fashion show will showcase runway models displaying fashion designed by the institute’s graduating seniors. A variety of clothing will be modeled, including women’s and men’s wear, and gender-fluid clothing.

There will also be mannequins displaying student-designed “trashion” wear, which is upcycle, recycled, and repurposed clothing. The purpose of this display is to bring attention to the need for sustainable clothing; the fashion industry is one of the world’s largest polluters.
Examples of trashion wear include the following:
  • Recyclable—recovering fiber, yarn, or fabric and reprocessing the material into new, useful products.
  • Repurposed—clothing that are worn out or damaged e.g., old t-shirts turned into cleaning rags, jeans that are made into tote bags, and sweaters transformed into cozy pillow covers.
  • Upcycled—transforming old clothes into new items. This can include adding patches, dyeing fabrics, or even cutting and re-sewing pieces to create a completely new garment.
On display will also be clothing designed by the institute’s alumni successfully working in the fashion industry, including Argentina fashion celebrity Gustavo Gramajo.

At the event, a new pathway program will be announced that allows SLCC Fashion Institute students a pathway into Utah State University’s Outdoor Product Design and Development program. This collaboration introduces an articulation transfer agreement designed to seamlessly transfer SLCC Technical Apparel fashion and design graduates into USU's OPDD program.

The event is free and open to the public.

HB 261 and HB 257 Frequently Asked Questions

Dear Faculty, Staff and Students: The Utah Legislature recently passed two bills that significantly impact higher education:  HB 261  Equal Opportunity Initiatives and HB  257  Sex-Based Designations for Privacy, Anti-Bullying, and Women’s Opportunities. Salt Lake Community College is deeply committed to our students, faculty, and staff. We strive to be a place where all are welcomed and respected. While there are many unknowns about the ultimate effect these bills will have on some student and staff support programs, be assured that SLCC will maintain an environment where all can find success and feel a sense of belonging. In the coming months, college leadership will work to gain clarity and determine the changes necessary for legislative compliance. We will also share this information as it becomes available.  We realize that during this time, some in our college community may feel unsettled and stressed. We encourage you to make use of available SLCC resources designed to support y
