Salt Lake Community College announces Abby Wambach as its 2012 Commencement speaker. The 2012 Salt Lake Community College Commencement Ceremony will take place on Thursday, May 3 at 4:30 p.m. at the Maverik Center, located at 3200 South Decker Lake Drive in West Valley City, Utah.
Abby Wambach was a collegiate All-American as a player at the University of Florida who first joined the United States’ Women’s National Team in 2001. She has won an Olympic Games gold medal and led the U.S. team to the World Cup finals. Wambach has been recognized as the U.S. Soccer Female Athlete of the Year and FIFA Women’s World Player of the Year—and currently ranks second in lifetime international competition goals scored behind only her former teammate Mia Hamm.
In 2001, she made her WNT debut at that year’s Nike U.S. Women’s Cup. The next year, she was the second player taken in the WUSA draft by the Washington Freedom. In 2003, Abby started all five Women’s World Cup matches and helped the U.S. to a third place finish. After the World Cup, Abby was named U.S. Soccer’s Female Athlete of the Year for 2003. She scored four goals and had one assist on the gold medal-winning U.S. team at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, Greece. She received the 2004 U.S. Soccer Female Athlete of the Year for the second year in a row and finished fourth in the voting for the 2004 FIFA Women’s World Player of the Year.
In addition to her celebrated international career, Wambach has been instrumental in establishing a women’s professional soccer league in the U.S. She was drafted second in the Women's United Soccer Association’s (WUSA) 2002 draft. The WUSA was the first ever women's soccer league to provide a professional salary to all of its players. Wambach was named MVP of the championship match after leading the Washington Freedom to the league title. She also became a player/manager for the Women’s Professional Soccer league team the magicJack.
Wambach comes from a big, athletic family. The youngest of seven children, she has four brothers and two sisters. Her parents came to all but four of her college games. She also has an English bulldog named Kingston who can ride a skateboard.
