Juntos Podemos/Together We Can and the Institute for Mexicans Abroad (IME) recently awarded a $5,000 IME-Becas grant to the Utah-based FUNDET Scholarship Program, which will help 10 to 15 Mexican students attending Salt Lake Community College. During an event at the Mexican Consulate in Salt Lake City to announce grant awards for several institutions in Utah, Mexican Consul Eduardo Arnal said the money helps with the development and personal growth of Mexican students as well as the economic and social development of Mexican communities. Scholarship recipient Ciria Alvarez talked about how the funding helped her overcome “barriers” and “obstacles” as an undocumented student toward someday becoming a civil rights attorney. Musician Scott Helmer is playing concerts in 12 cities within 24 hours Nov. 30 to Dec. 1, ending with a concert at Salt Lake Community College’s Grand Theatre on the South City Campus in Salt Lake City. Helmer is using the concerts to raise money for the Kostopulos Dream Foundation—aka Camp Kostopulos, or Camp K —and break a Guinness Book of World Records title in the process.   Camp K, 4180 E. Emigration Canyon Road, Salt Lake City, provides high-quality programs in a safe environment for people of all abilities and is dedicated to improving the lives of people with disabilities through education, recreation and growth opportunities. Helmer’s goal, along with television stations KTVX and KUCW, is to raise $1 million for Camp K. The Salt Lake Community College's Dance Company will perform "Forces of Nature" Nov. 20 and 21, 7:30 p.m. at the Grand Theatre on South City Campus in Salt Lake City. Professional dancers from several local companies are joining the SLCC dancers for the annual fall show.

Salt Lake Community College presents the final show of the SLCC Choirs Fall Semester Performances 2015 with Carols of Christmas Dec. 4, 7:30 p.m. at the All Saints Episcopal Church, 1710 Foothill Dr., Salt Lake City. Salt Lake Community College students are invited to submit poetry manuscripts in the sixth annual SLCC Chapbook Competition . The deadline to submit a manuscript is Nov. 23. Submissions should be chapbook length—12 to 25 shorter poems (one page per poem), or a set of longer poems, equivalent in length. The writer of the winning manuscript will be awarded a $100 honorarium and the opportunity to work with Publication Studies students to design and publish the collection in 250 chapbooks using the SLCC Publication Center. The winner will receive a set of 25 chapbooks. Finalists will be awarded publication of 25 chapbooks and five chapbooks for themselves. The winning manuscript will be distributed on campus and in the community. Finalists will have chapbooks of their manuscripts distributed on campus. Wells Fargo donated $7,000 to Salt Lake Community College to purchase healthful snacks for students to be given away during finals at SLCC. Academic Advising and Student Life and Leadership are partners in the project.

Congratulations to the 2015-2016 Employee Innovation of the Year Recipients! Employee Innovation Grants  provide opportunities for full-time employees to learn and develop new skills, with the goal of sharing their knowledge with colleagues and making innovative changes at Salt Lake Community College. Grants support meaningful and well-charted professional-development projects for which funding might not otherwise be available. The nonprofit Columbus, an agency that supports people with disabilities, recently honored Salt Lake Community College with its Business Partner of the Year award. The honor recognizes SLCC for working with Columbus to promote vocational opportunities for people with disabilities within the business community. SLCC was given the award recently during Columbus’ 10 th annual Dignity Through Work recognition event. The SLCC Facilities Services Department has awarded grounds maintenance and custodial contracts to Columbus, which in turn has allowed Columbus to provide vocational training and employment opportunities to individuals with disabilities.
