Miller Business Resource Center Partners With Nonprofit SCORE

The Miller Business Resource Center (MBRC) at Salt Lake Community College has formed a new partnership with SCORE, a nonprofit association dedicated to educating entrepreneurs and helping small businesses start, grow and succeed nationwide. SCORE will have offices at SLCC’s Miller Campus in Sandy and work alongside the MBRC to serve the state’s diverse business community at one location.

“We’re thrilled to have SCORE mentors and volunteers working on our campus,” said Beth Colosimo, Executive Director of Business Resource Development at SLCC’s MBRC. “They have an excellent reputation and their services complement the offerings we already have with our Business Resource Center, SBDC, our Global Business Center, and our Business Incubator and Goldman Sachs 10,000 Small Businesses program.”

SCORE has been an important contributor and collaborator in the ecosystem of small business support and entrepreneurship in Utah, encouraging business owners to maintain a relationship with SCORE from the beginning and throughout the life of their businesses. The Salt Lake SCORE office is recognized nationally as one of the top performing small business mentoring organizations in the country.

“We are very proud of our Salt Lake SCORE office and are thrilled to be the guests of the MBRC,” said Ron Baron, President of the SCORE Salt Lake Chapter. “As volunteers, we get so excited to see the documentable impact that Salt Lake SCORE has on the local business community. SCORE earned the National "Client Education Award" in recognition of the meatiness, relevance, and expansion of education and workshop activities in the area.”

SCORE exceeded its goal of a 20 percent increase in the number of contacts for mentoring and workshop attendance over the past two years. They are a lead partner with Home Shopping Network (HSN) and have a breadth of diversity within their volunteer and subject matter expert base. SCORE is also a resource partner with the U.S. Small Business Administration and has been mentoring small business owners for more than 50 years.

“Our goal at the SLCC Miller Campus is to provide a one-stop shop for entrepreneurs and small business owners to find the assistance, support, training and education needed to get started or to help grow an existing business. I can think of no better way than aligning with the best small business support partners who share our mission for creating jobs and opportunities for people with a passion for business,” Colosimo added.

The Center for Prior Learning Receives an Honorable Mention

Today, SLCC's Credit for Prior Learning department received an Honorable Mention from the  Council for Adult and Experiential Learning (CAEL ) and the  Western Interstate Commission for Higher Education  for its intentional approach and for expanding student options to receive credit for prior learning.  Credit for Prior Learning (CPL)  allows students to obtain college credit for knowledge and skills acquired outside of the traditional academic environment. This is exceptionally beneficial for adult learners, who, according to CAEL, have a 17% higher chance of graduating compared to those adults who don’t earn credits through prior learning programs. The CPL department at SLCC was created in 2020 and since then the volume of students served has grown as the department continues to expand. Board of Higher Ed names Gregory F. Peterson 9th SLCC President

The Utah Board of Higher Education unanimously selected Gregory F. Peterson, Ed.D., as the ninth president of Salt Lake Community College today, following an extensive national search. Peterson will assume the position on July 1, 2024, and succeeds Deneece G.
