Salt Lake
Community College Board of Trustees Chair Gail Miller has been chosen to
receive the Association of Community College Trustees Pacific Region Trustee
Leadership award. Miller will be given the award at the 47th annual
ACCT Leadership Congress in New Orleans in October.
“Our
college has no truer friend, advocate, benefactor or inspirational leader than
Gail Miller,” said Clint Ensign, Vice Chair of the Salt Lake Community College
Board of Trustees. “In SLCC’s long history, it is hard to remember an
individual who has produced as great an effect on the College.”
Gail Miller
Miller
became a SLCC trustee in 2004 and has been chair since 2013. “She is a tireless
champion for the College and its students with the governor, state legislators,
our congressional delegates, the Utah State Board of Regents and the business
community,” said SLCC President Deneece G. Huftalin. “It’s an honor to have her
serve the College in such a critical role.”
During
Miller’s time on the board, SLCC has added the Center for Arts & Media at
South City Campus and the Academic and Administration Building on the
Taylorsville Redwood Campus. The College has also added the Washington D.C.
internship program, secured funding for Westpointe Training and Education
Center and, just recently, the college-wide initiative SLCC Promise, which
helps qualifying students pay for their college education where federal funds
fall short.
Between
1998 and 2006, Gail and Larry Miller constructed and donated a $130 million
seven-building complex to SLCC known as the Miller Campus, where over 1,000
students access state-of-the-art resources for automotive training, public
safety education, entrepreneurial development, corporate partnerships and
culinary arts. Gail owns and chairs The Larry H. Miller Group, which operates
professional sports teams, automotive, entertainment, media and other
enterprises that employ over 10,000 people. Each year Miller lends her name and
support to an annual SLCC golf tournament, helping to raise $600,000 over four
years, funding 30 student scholarships each year.
The
Larry H. & Gail Miller Family Foundation was formed in 2007 to allow the
philanthropic spirit, which Larry and Gail have so graciously established, to
continue for generations to come. Larry H. Miller built a legacy of giving back
to the communities where he conducted business. Today, his wish to "Go
about doing good until there is too much good in the world" is what
inspires Gail Miller and the Miller family, as well as the entire Larry H.
Miller Group of Companies and its employees to continue the legacy he started.
The
Millers’ love of education inspired them to create the Larry H. Miller
Education Foundation. Instituted in 1996, its purpose is to provide educational
assistance to dependent children of full-time employees of the Larry H. Miller
Group of Companies.
Since its
inception, the LHM Education Foundation has helped more than 3,150 students at
60 different universities or trade schools throughout the United States.
