Amahl and the Night Visitors
Music and
original English Liberetto by Gian Carlo Menotti
Main Stage, Opera, Limited Engagement in partnership with the
University of Utah School of Music & Sinfonia Salt Lake
An opera in one
act, the show was commissioned by NBC and first performed by the NBC Opera
Theatre on December 24, 1951, in New York City at Rockefeller Center, where it
was broadcast live on television from that venue as the debut production of the
Hallmark Hall of Fame. The story centers around Amahl, a disabled boy who can
only walk with a crutch and has a problem with telling tall tales. One night he
is amazed when he sees three splendidly dressed kings, the Magi on their way to
witness the birth of the Christ child, standing outside his door. This charming
and heartwarming story, told through the eyes of a child, is a delight for
audiences of all ages.
