BSU Event Airs Racial Injustices, Offers Advice for Change

Black Student Union President Jaycee Galvin Fueled by hope – or perhaps, prisoners of hope, to paraphrase Dr. Cornel West – in the belief that impactful, lasting change can be brought to the subject of racial injustice, students, staff and faculty at Salt Lake Community College gathered to hear and share ideas of what can be done to tip the scales.   The SLCC Black Student Union (BSU) dubbed their event, “The Time is Now: Let’s Talk About Racial Injustices,” assembling at the college’s Taylorsville Redwood Campus. With media attention more focused on the pandemic and less on the continuing peaceful protests around the country, the gathering was also about timing and momentum.   “We thought that putting off this event to a later time is not the right thing to do right now,” said BSU President Jaycee Galvin. “We figure now is the time to raise our voices and be heard.” Dr. Roderic Land With face coverings at the ready, everyone properly social distancing and the smell of hand s...

Class of 2020 Encouraged During Virtual Commencement Ceremony to Keep their “Souls Aloft”

Dr. Craig E. Ferrin plays the National Anthem. Salt Lake Community College is proud to announce the debut of its virtual commencement ceremony in honor of its graduating class of 2020. The ceremony is available to view at slcc.edu , and graduates are invited to watch at their convenience and celebrate their achievements with family and friends.   Commencement is the most anticipated and memorable event of the year at SLCC, with the college’s 2020 ceremony originally scheduled for May 8 at West Valley City’s Maverik Center. However, in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic the event was cancelled, moving school officials to create a virtual tribute for its 2020 grads. This unique commencement still features traditional elements of past graduation ceremonies, including congratulatory messages from college faculty, musical performances and a message to students delivered by Dr. Deneece G. Huftalin, president of SLCC.   “You would not be where you are today without resilience, courag...

Signs of Life: Miller Campus

Parts of Salt Lake Community College are slowly beginning to reopen during the COVID-19 pandemic, ushering in a "new normal" in a community that normally thrives on unfettered access to the environment and resources that make SLCC one of the top community colleges in the nation. Signs of Life is a series that shines a light on stops along the long road back to normal operations.   As Jared Heywood sits in a classroom, dressed in a crisp uniform shirt while listening to an instructor, a masked John Clark is sweating on a mat during a defensive tactics lab down the hall, reacting in a split second to break the hold of a fellow student, also wearing a mask, during a simulation.   Jared and John are among a new batch of Law Enforcement Academy cadets being trained at the Public Safety Education & Training Center (PSET) on Salt Lake Community College’s Miller Campus. Coursework is divided into Special Function Officer (SFO) and Law Enforcement Officer (LEO) modules. Combined, ...

To Kill A Mockingbird (Almost) Ushers in Reopening of Grand Theatre

UPDATE: As of June 30, the Grand Theatre announced the cancellation of To Kill A Mockingbird due to the spike in COVID-19 numbers. For more information, click here . Mark Fossen (Atticus Finch) and Dee-Dee Darby-Duffin (Calpurnia) rehearse a scene.   It’s here, at last - the new stage adaptation of Harper Lee's To Kill a Mockingbird, which premiered on Broadway and features a script by Oscar and Emmy winner Aaron Sorkin.   Set in the Depression-Era South, Tom Robinson, a black man, is accused of a crime against a white woman. When Lawyer Atticus Finch takes on the case, he is determined to give Tom a fair trial, despite the rampant racism and prejudice in his small town. A heated dissection of justice and virtue, this modern adaptation questions how far we have come since Lee's classic story was first published in 1960.   Patrons are being required to wear masks while visiting the theatre and to not attend if they are feeling any symptoms of COVID-19. There will...

Signs of Life: Westpointe

Parts of Salt Lake Community College are slowly beginning to reopen during the COVID-19 pandemic, ushering in a "new normal" in a community that normally thrives on unfettered access to the environment and resources that make SLCC one of the top community colleges in the nation. Signs of Life is a series that shines a light on stops along the long road back to normal operations. Elli Cunanan seems unphased as an otherworldly-looking figure hovers ominously in the background over a fellow welding student. Instead, Elli pays rapt attention to instructor Richard Prazen as he demonstrates how to shape small pieces of flat metal into a rose.   To the uninitiated, you’d swear you were seeing some post-apocalyptic creature, with its giant helmet and breathing apparatus attached at the waist by a large tube. A Star Wars character comes to mind. The strange sighting, however, is just part of the new normal during a global pandemic while in the welding lab at Salt Lake Community Colleg...
