Julie Meldrum

Preferred pronouns:
She/her/hers

Degree(s) earned and institutions:
Bachelor’s degree in journalism and telecommunications from Arizona State University

Years at SLCC:
5

Current position:
Specialist III, Miller Library

Department:
Library Services

What is a typical day or week like for you?
I love working with students to find what they need to complete classroom assignments. Part of my job is working with faculty to make sure the materials they need are readily available at the library.

What are the most challenging aspects of your job?
Each semester I make it a point to let our students know about their library and what resources are available to them. Every semester is like a new beginning!

What rewards come with your job?
When I see a student grow in their experience here at SLCC and then graduate — no better reward!

Who or what inspires you at work or in life and why?
Before becoming a librarian, I worked in radio and television. College prepares you to ask question and be curious about what is around you and, broadcasting honed that skill! I can’t think of a better way to prepare to be a librarian. I was the first in my family to go to college and getting my degree was not an easy task. When I see challenges ahead of me in life, career, etc. — I remember that accomplishment and remind myself I can do hard things!

Tell us something about yourself from outside of your SLCC life:
I love yoga. I always say doing yoga is like giving yourself a warm hug!

Family:
My husband and I have a blended family of 4 children, 2 dogs and one cat.

Hobbies/interests:
I love to read, but I am not really a fan of fiction. I also love documentaries.

Awards/accomplishments (if applicable):
Two Staff Star Recognition awards from SLCC, six Branch awards, and two Excellence in Service awards from the Phoenix Public Library

Recognizing SLCC's 2025 Distinguished Faculty Lecturer Andrew Vogt, PhD Associate Professor, Engineering

The Distinguished Faculty Lecturer is a recognition of quality work by one of Salt Lake Community College’s full-time faculty and a charge to develop that work over an academic year into a public presentation. A committee chosen by the Associate Provost for Learning Advancement selects the faculty lecturer each year. The lecture takes place in the spring. Distinguished Faculty Lecturer Andrew Vogt, PhD Associate Professor, Engineering Dr. Andrew Vogt’s teaching philosophy is guided by two principles, curiosity and efficiency.  “Curiosity leads us to study a topic and allows us to really understand the ins and outs of research, while efficiency is all about sustainability,” he says. Andrew describes curiosity as a pure, open-minded impulse to explore, such as the ease with which children learn new concepts with virtually no instruction. Efficiency adds maturity to that childlike impulse, creating structures and pathways for accomplishment.  Andrew’s work has alwa...
