Salt Lake Community College Strengthens Sustainability Commitment by Joining AASHE

SLCC recently joined the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (ASHEE). As an Institution of Higher Education, SLCC is entrusted with educating the next generation of professionals and physical environments on SLCC campuses can impact student's learning and experiences. Joining ASHEE will provide SLCC with additional resources to implement and strengthen sustainable efforts to create more ecologically healthy campuses.

“AASHE counts on the support of progressive institutions like Salt Lake Community College to fulfill its mission to inspire and catalyze higher education to lead the global sustainability transformation,” says AASHE Executive Director Meghan Fay Zahniser, in a Press Release welcoming SLCC to AASHE.

As SLCC continues to shift in a more environmentally sustainable direction, the college and AASHE encourage all members—students, staff, and faculty—to access resources. Chris McCarty, author of SLCC’s Sustainability Plan and Environmental Club Advisor, encourages everyone to visit the website and learn more about sustainability. “We, as a college, can advance our sustainability goals through AASHE by being able to access endless resources,” says Chris.

The Sustainability Tracking, Assessment, and Rating System, better known as STARS within AASHE, provide institutions with a way to measure sustainability performances and assess the progress created compared to peer institutions while obtaining a ranking. “Right now, we have obtained recognition by AASHE as we are working towards sustainable goals. I think we can work on STARS and get our sustainability ranking down the road,” says Chris.

In the Spring of 2020 SLCC released a Sustainability Plan which highlights eight core components regarding the importance to be a more ecological campus. The resources provided by ASHEE complement the institution’s Sustainability Plan. By implementing and fostering environmentally sustainable efforts SLCC leads by example and hopes that students, staff, and faculty will feel empowered to assist in the cause.
