75 Years of Nursing

Nursing was one of the original programs taught when SLCC, then Salt Lake Vocational School, opened its doors on September 14, 1948. The program advertised as a well-paid and dignified lifetime vocation, provided both theory and hands-on experience, for a diverse age group. On August 25, 1949, Practical Nursing held its first commencement exercise which continued until 1986, when the institution became a community college, and everyone was included in the college-wide graduation ceremony.

In 1954, the Practical Nursing program was accredited by the National Association for Practical Nurses, making it one of the first programs at the College to be accredited. This gave nursing graduates the opportunity to participate in national tests administered by the National League for Nursing. Industry experts noted at the time that our nurses were receiving the highest scores in the nation.

In 1972 the College collaborated with Weber State College to offer an associate’s degree in nursing and by 1989, the College began offering its own associate degree in Registered Nursing.

Throughout the decades, the nursing program has changed along with the institution’s name; however, one thing has remained the same. SLCC is committed to providing the highest quality of education for students in a field where people work hard to help others live better lives.

Beginning January 2024, the SLCC Nursing Program will become a year-round program. Students accepted into the Spring 2024 cohort and beyond will be able complete their RN degree in less than 18 months. In Summer 2024, the program will shift to 12-week trimesters.

SLCC Business School is Utah’s First to be Named Exclusively After a Woman

Salt Lake Community College (SLCC) proudly announces a partnership with the Larry H. & Gail Miller Family Foundation to modernize its Business Building and transform its School of Business. The improvements are made possible through a generous $10 million gift from the Miller Family Foundation and Gail Miller, the largest-ever single cash donation received by the college.  SLCC is renaming its Business Building the Larry H. & Gail Miller Family Business Building in honor of the Miller family’s legacy and contributions to the community. The business school will be named the Gail Miller School of Business in recognition of the strong business acumen Gail Miller displays as a community leader and as the owner and immediate past chair of the Larry H. Miller Company. This name change will make SLCC home to the only business school in Utah and one of only a few in the country to be named exclusively after a woman.  “We are deeply humbled by the generosity of Gail and the Miller fam
