Nerves and Excitement: The First Day of School at SLCC’s New Herriman Campus

On Tuesday, the first day of school, the halls and classrooms at Salt Lake Community College’s new Herriman campus swirled with the excitement and energy of new students. “It’s like the humming of bees. We get to finally hear the buzz of students throughout the building,” says Susie Garcia, assistant director of Campus and Site Services. She and her team staffed the Juniper Building’s East entrance, answering questions, helping students locate their classrooms and handing out SLCC swag.

More than 700 students are enrolled in classes at Herriman this Fall Semester, many from high schools nearby. “I just live up the street,” says Kiris Blue, who attended Herriman’s Providence Hall High School, and plans to earn an associate’s degree of Business. “Half my paycheck goes to gas, so I’m super glad this place is so close to home.”

Kiris was hanging out on the second floor in the East atrium area with her friend Hadley Donaldson who attended the same high school and is also pursuing an associate’s in business. They visited the campus last week, to figure out where each of their three classes were located.

Down the hall, in quieter area, Nate Bingham had just finished a history class. Typically, he takes classes at the Taylorsville Redwood campus, since it is near his home and work, but the history class fit with his busy work schedule. “Once I earn my associate’s degree, I’ll be able to go for a fulltime position where I work and get more pay and benefits,” says Nate, who is interested in business and marketing.

In the sitting and dining area near the cafeteria, Alec Angeletti was working on his laptop. He had just finished an online class, the Fundamentals of Programming. “I just live a few minutes away, but I like coming here because it is easier to focus,” says Alec, who is pursuing an associate’s degree in Computer Science and plans to transfer to the University of Utah (the U) next semester to earn his bachelor’s in Computer Science. “I would love to take all the classes that I can through the U right here,” adds Alec.

Alec will be among the first group of students to take advantage of this new and unique collaboration between SLCC and the U in which students can earn their associate’s degree at SLCC and effortlessly transfer to the U for a bachelor's degree, all in one location on the Herriman campus.

The Herriman campus also has a robust offering of ESL classes and today, August 23, upwards of 170 students are anticipated at the ESL Express Registration. Students will be able to have help filling out admission applications, take placement tests and meet with an advisor. “It’s one stop shopping, where these students can take care of all of these things at once,” says Susie, adding that walk-ins are welcome.

HB 261 and HB 257 Frequently Asked Questions

Dear Faculty, Staff and Students: The Utah Legislature recently passed two bills that significantly impact higher education:  HB 261  Equal Opportunity Initiatives and HB  257  Sex-Based Designations for Privacy, Anti-Bullying, and Women’s Opportunities. Salt Lake Community College is deeply committed to our students, faculty, and staff. We strive to be a place where all are welcomed and respected. While there are many unknowns about the ultimate effect these bills will have on some student and staff support programs, be assured that SLCC will maintain an environment where all can find success and feel a sense of belonging. In the coming months, college leadership will work to gain clarity and determine the changes necessary for legislative compliance. We will also share this information as it becomes available.  We realize that during this time, some in our college community may feel unsettled and stressed. We encourage you to make use of available SLCC resources designed to support y
