Facilities: Fostering Employee Growth One Person At A Time

The Facilities Department is one of Salt Lake Community College largest departments based on the number of employees. They house the most talented individuals within their trades, fields and expertise. Across the division are project managers, carpenters, plumbers and, of course, our ever present custodial and grounds people.

Tyler Clark, lead plumber and plumbing apprenticeship program instructor, started his career at SLCC in the facilities department in 2014 as a proud member of the custodial team. When a plumbing position opened up Tyler was interested but didn’t have the requisite knowledge or certificate. Tyler decided to take to his supervisors and the plumbing team and found the support he needed to complete the Plumbing Apprenticeship program. Upon graduating from his program, he was approached by SLCC, where he was offered the opportunity to become an instructor at the Plumbing Apprenticeship program.

Often in the background Facilities plays a significant role at SLCC. They provide critical services in providing and maintaining clean and safe learning and working environment. However, their support is not only geared towards other departments, folks within the Facilities department also get benefit from them by being motivated to further their education or learn a trade and financial assistance to do so.

Tyler says teamwork is Facilities mantra as a solid collaborative team where everyone helps to uplift the team and get the work done. Tyler highlights that trusting and respecting each other’s knowledge, trades and skills enhances their teamwork and collaboration. “During the big snowstorms, we all came to help. Even Josh, the associate vice president of Facilities, shoveled snow with us. It is not about a title or a trade, it is about working together as a team to get it done, and we happily do it,” says Tyler.

Facilities currently has several openings. For those interested in being part of a team that makes a daily difference in creating a pleasing environment for students, staff, faculty and SLCC can view the application by clicking here.

The Distinguished Faculty Lecturer is a recognition of quality work by one of Salt Lake Community College’s full-time faculty and a charge to develop that work over an academic year into a public presentation. A committee chosen by the Associate Provost for Learning Advancement selects the faculty lecturer each year. The lecture takes place in the spring. Distinguished Faculty Lecturer Andrew Vogt, PhD Associate Professor, Engineering Dr. Andrew Vogt’s teaching philosophy is guided by two principles, curiosity and efficiency.  “Curiosity leads us to study a topic and allows us to really understand the ins and outs of research, while efficiency is all about sustainability,” he says. Andrew describes curiosity as a pure, open-minded impulse to explore, such as the ease with which children learn new concepts with virtually no instruction. Efficiency adds maturity to that childlike impulse, creating structures and pathways for accomplishment.  Andrew’s work has alwa...
