Open SLCC Celebrates a Decade of Open Educational Resources

This week Salt Lake Community College is not only celebrating one milestone, the 75th anniversary, but another one - 10 years of commitment to Open Educational Resources (OER). Over the past decade SLCC has been committed to providing affordable and inclusive educational resources to its students.

Open Educational Resources have become a cornerstone of modern education, providing students with accessible and affordable learning materials. OER are no-cost or low-cost textbooks that faculty use in their courses to help students save money. SLCC has been a pioneer in adopting and promoting OER, making education more inclusive and equitable for its diverse student body.

“As we mark the milestone of Open SLCC's 10th anniversary, we celebrate a decade dedicated to making education accessible and advocating for student success, inclusivity and educational equity through Open Educational Resources," said Andrea Scott, director of OER.

Open SLCC is hosting a special event featuring a workshop led by Jasmine Roberts-Crews from The Ohio State University, focused on the future of OER and its intersection with social justice. Jasmine is a leader in OER and an advocate for education systems that are accessible, affordable, equitable and inclusive to everyone, not only to save students money, but allowing students to see themselves in the curriculum.

“The Open SLCC team is thrilled to welcome Jasmine Roberts-Crews, a distinguished Open Education Leader known for her nationwide keynote speeches on topics of inclusion in Open Education. As part of the celebration, Roberts-Crews will lead a workshop that explores the intersectionality of Social Justice and OER, emphasizing its vital role in supporting SLCC students beyond the affordability aspects typically associated with OER,” says Andrea.

The event will take place on Friday, September 15 from noon to 2:30 p.m. at the Student Event Center on the Taylorsville Redwood Campus and is open to SLCC administration, faculty and staff. It will provide participants an opportunity to gain valuable insights into the future of education and the role of OER in fostering social justice.

Recognizing SLCC's 2025 Distinguished Faculty Lecturer Andrew Vogt, PhD Associate Professor, Engineering

The Distinguished Faculty Lecturer is a recognition of quality work by one of Salt Lake Community College’s full-time faculty and a charge to develop that work over an academic year into a public presentation. A committee chosen by the Associate Provost for Learning Advancement selects the faculty lecturer each year. The lecture takes place in the spring. Distinguished Faculty Lecturer Andrew Vogt, PhD Associate Professor, Engineering Dr. Andrew Vogt’s teaching philosophy is guided by two principles, curiosity and efficiency.  “Curiosity leads us to study a topic and allows us to really understand the ins and outs of research, while efficiency is all about sustainability,” he says. Andrew describes curiosity as a pure, open-minded impulse to explore, such as the ease with which children learn new concepts with virtually no instruction. Efficiency adds maturity to that childlike impulse, creating structures and pathways for accomplishment.  Andrew’s work has alwa...
