"Courage cultivated in the military isn't confined to the battlefield; it's a mindset that extends into every aspect of life. One habit born from the ethos of courage that I still uphold is facing challenges head-on. In the military, embracing difficult situations with courage and determination was crucial, and this habit persists in my daily life." -Kam Howell

Kam Howell, an Army veteran and SLCC alum, is no stranger to serving others in his job. He previously served the United States of America and now serves Salt Lake Community College as the Director of Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC). Kam's military career of a decade included serving in two military branches, the Army and the National Guard, where he obtained immeasurable professional and personal experience.
At 22, Kam packed his bags and embarked on the military journey, knowing he was part of something larger than himself, where he not only learned he was simply just strong but he was Army strong. One of the greatest lessons the Army taught him was about integrity.
"Integrity is not just a concept, it is a way of life. One of the most profound lessons I learned is the unwavering importance of integrity. It is the cornerstone of trust, forming the bedrock of any functional team or organization," Kam says about his Army experience. The military life provided Kam with newly acquired skills and knowledge that he continues to utilize daily.
While serving in the National Guard he learned about HVAC and became interested in the trade. Kam was sent to Kansas, where he learned the trade, and years later, it was the same skills and knowledge he obtained in the military that would earn him the title of Director of HVAC for the College.
Transitioning from the military to civilian life looks entirely different for every service member. Finding an institution that shares common core values with him and the military was a bonus for Kam. The principles and values shared by SLCC and the military have enhanced Kam's experience at the College and encouraged him to contribute more positively to the SLCC community.
