NPR’s Ari Shapiro visits SLCC


Salt Lake Community College will host National Public Radio's White House Correspondent Ari Shapiro on Monday, Oct. 21 at 7 p.m.


As part of Salt Lake Community College's Speakers Bureau Series, Ari Shapiro, NPR's White House correspondent, will talk about covering the justice department, Mitt Romney's presidential campaign and the White House.

Salt Lake City is one of several speaking stops Shapiro is making before he leaves his White House post to join NPR's international desk as the London correspondent in January.

KUER's RadioWest host, Doug Fabrizio, will moderate a question and answer session.

Shapiro has been at NPR since 2003, including five years as a justice correspondent covering national security and counterterrorism. He's been at the White House since 2010. Last year, he led NPR's coverage of Mitt Romney during the U.S. Presidential primary and general elections.

Shapiro's stories appear on NPR's All Things Considered and Morning Edition. He is also a regular guest on CNN, MSNBC and PBS. The award-winning journalist, who was the first NPR reporter promoted to correspondent before age 30, has traveled extensively overseas, including to Afghanistan, Iraq and Africa.


Shapiro also moonlights as a guest singer with the music group Pink Martini.

Where: The Grand Theater at Salt Lake Community College, 1575 S. State Street, Salt Lake City.
Cost: Free, though tickets are required in advance.

The Center for Prior Learning Receives an Honorable Mention

Today, SLCC's Credit for Prior Learning department received an Honorable Mention from the  Council for Adult and Experiential Learning (CAEL ) and the  Western Interstate Commission for Higher Education  for its intentional approach and for expanding student options to receive credit for prior learning.  Credit for Prior Learning (CPL)  allows students to obtain college credit for knowledge and skills acquired outside of the traditional academic environment. This is exceptionally beneficial for adult learners, who, according to CAEL, have a 17% higher chance of graduating compared to those adults who don’t earn credits through prior learning programs. The CPL department at SLCC was created in 2020 and since then the volume of students served has grown as the department continues to expand. Board of Higher Ed names Gregory F. Peterson 9th SLCC President

The Utah Board of Higher Education unanimously selected Gregory F. Peterson, Ed.D., as the ninth president of Salt Lake Community College today, following an extensive national search. Peterson will assume the position on July 1, 2024, and succeeds Deneece G.
