Eddy “The Jet”
Alvarez’s performance in the Men’s 1500 event for short track speed skating
will be televised tonight after 7 p.m. as part of NBC’s coverage of the 2014
Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia.
Within the past
day Alvarez tweeted and posted on his Facebook page from Russia, “I wake up
this morning. Realize that I’m about to step on Olympic ice. Excuse me if you
see some tears in my eyes once I am gliding around.”
The Miami-born
son of Cuban immigrants moved to Utah to train at the world-renowned Utah Olympic
Oval in Kearns. While in Utah he attended Salt Lake Community College and in
2011 walked on to the College’s baseball team as a shortstop, batting an
impressive .303 and making the All-Conference team.
Alvarez, 24,
fought back from double knee surgery in 2012 to make the U.S. Olympic speed
skating team. He said his plans are to give up speed skating after the Olympics
to pursue baseball while returning to SLCC.
