Salt Lake Community College Dental Hygiene students voluntarily
served vets during the 2013 Homeless Veterans Stand Down, earning them a VA Certificate
of Appreciation.
“I think that it is a wonderful recognition of our
students,” said SLCC’s Dental Hygiene Program Director Lynne Berman. “The
certificate is proudly displayed on the clinic wall to remind future students
that their efforts are greatly appreciated by the veterans they serve.”
Students regularly take part in active clinical rotations on
Fridays at the George E. Wahlen Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center
in Salt Lake City. During the most recent annual Stand Down, however,
second-year students volunteered for an entire day while providing dental oral
hygiene to about 100 homeless veterans. The event was also a chance for
students to fulfill specific clinical requirements.
“They loved it,” Berman said. “They enjoyed the interaction.
It was very exciting. They felt like they had contributed toward helping
veterans.”
VA employee and SLCC Dental Hygiene Program Advisory
Committee member Diane Rosner nominated the College to receive the certificate.
