SLCC basketball teams headed to Kansas for NCJAA National Tournaments

Men’s and women’s basketball teams headed to Kansas

These are historic times for the men’s and women’s basketball programs at Salt Lake Community College.

Both teams are headed to Kansas next week for the men’s and women’s NJCAA Division I Basketball Championship tournaments. Never before in SLCC history have both teams gone to the Big Dance in the same season.

SLCC coach Betsy Specketer led the women’s team on a 16-game winning streak and finished the season 25-7, earning the team an “at-large” bid to play at the Bicentennial Center in Salina, Kansas. The team shared a Scenic West Athletic Conference championship this year with College of Southern Idaho.

The women’s first-round game will be March 17, with a 3:30 p.m. (Utah time) tipoff that can be seen on a live web stream at http://www.ihigh.com/womenbkbchamp (specify Game 4 among the “DI WBB” links). The 12th seeded Bruins will face 21-seed Lake Region State from North Dakota.

The men’s opening-round game March 19 at Hutchinson Sports Arena can be seen streamed live at 1 p.m. (Utah time) at http://www.ihigh.com/menbkbchamp (specify Game 14 among the “DI MBB” links).

The men’s team captured its second consecutive Region 18 championship and ended the season 27-6 under the leadership of head coach Todd Phillips. The Bruins are seeded 7th and will face the winner of the game pitting Columbia State (No. 10 seed) against Central Georgia (No. 23).

Good luck to both teams!

Today, SLCC's Credit for Prior Learning department received an Honorable Mention from the  Council for Adult and Experiential Learning (CAEL ) and the  Western Interstate Commission for Higher Education  for its intentional approach and for expanding student options to receive credit for prior learning.  Credit for Prior Learning (CPL)  allows students to obtain college credit for knowledge and skills acquired outside of the traditional academic environment. This is exceptionally beneficial for adult learners, who, according to CAEL, have a 17% higher chance of graduating compared to those adults who don’t earn credits through prior learning programs. The CPL department at SLCC was created in 2020 and since then the volume of students served has grown as the department continues to expand. To be eligible for CPL, students must be working towards a degree, certificate, or apprenticeship. Director of Credit for Prior Learning at SLCC, Andrea Tipton, mentioned fee...
