New Engineering Course, Redesigned Degree Offered this Fall

Engineering affects every aspect of daily life – from the technology we use to the water we drink, from the roads we travel to the structures we create, even the machines we build and the power they use. Engineers are in high demand, and students’ interests in a variety of areas can be realized – and they can make a difference in people’s daily lives – with a career in engineering.   Salt Lake Community College’s newly redesigned engineering degree, listed in the SLCC catalog as the General Engineering Traditional (Pre-Engineering APE) degree, is new this fall. The program includes general education courses, required math and science courses and elective courses that allow students to specialize in civil, chemical, computer, electrical, geological, material science, mining, mechanical or metallurgical engineering. The program allows students to complete the first two years of a four-year engineering degree and apply those credits at most universities.  For ...

From 'Outsiders' to Part of a Community, Native American Brothers Find Second Home, New Path at College

Joey (left) and Joseph Du Shane-Navanick stand next to a monument of a Ute warrior on their reservation. Twin brothers Joseph and Joey Du Shane-Navanick stand on land above Bottle Hollow reservoir, a place on the Uintah and Ouray Indian Reservation that brings back many great childhood memories, pointing on a hot August day toward distant hazy horizons that show just how far their ancestral homeland stretches. These days, their education has taken them a long way from home and all that was familiar and comfortable to them. But it’s worth it to them. After all, you could get lost or forgotten out here – in reality and metaphorically. Joey and Joseph don’t want either scenario to play out for themselves, their tribe or for any Native Americans.   So, the brothers had several goals when they enrolled separately in recent years at Salt Lake Community College. To be seen. To be heard. To be understood. To connect with others who look like them. To discover who they want to become. Joey ...

SLCC Lowers Student Fees for Fall Semester

Good news, Bruins! To help our students during this unprecedented time, SLCC is reducing its fees by 15 percent for Fall 2020 Semester for students taking six or more credit hours. This reduction equates to a savings of $40 per student. The lingering COVID-19 pandemic has had an ongoing economic impact on many of our students. Last spring, we moved quickly to reduce educational costs by making the decision to defer a scheduled 1.5 percent tuition increase until spring 2021. At that time, we also began waiving the $15 co-pay for visits to the SLCC Center for Health and Counseling. This fee will continue to be waived throughout fall semester. We’re excited for a new semester and we’re looking forward to seeing our students on campus. Together, we’ll get through this challenging time.
