New Engineering Course, Redesigned Degree Offered this Fall

Engineering affects every aspect of daily life – from the technology we use to the water we drink, from the roads we travel to the structures we create, even the machines we build and the power they use. Engineers are in high demand, and students’ interests in a variety of areas can be realized – and they can make a difference in people’s daily lives – with a career in engineering.

Salt Lake Community College’s newly redesigned engineering degree, listed in the SLCC catalog as the General Engineering Traditional (Pre-Engineering APE) degree, is new this fall. The program includes general education courses, required math and science courses and elective courses that allow students to specialize in civil, chemical, computer, electrical, geological, material science, mining, mechanical or metallurgical engineering. The program allows students to complete the first two years of a four-year engineering degree and apply those credits at most universities.  For more details, visit http://www.slcc.edu/engineering/index.aspx.

SLCC is also offering engineering students the new ENGR 1010 course. This class allows students to learn the engineering basics in an application-oriented, hands-on approach. Taking this class will prepare students for most every other engineering class at the college and is designed to help students be more successful in their math classes. Students already declared in any engineering degree are encouraged to take ENGR 1010.

Engineering and Engineering Technology have multiple degrees, certificates, and options to meet students’ career goals. Engineering advisors or Engineering Success coaches are eager to make students’ goals a reality.

The Center for Prior Learning Receives an Honorable Mention

Today, SLCC's Credit for Prior Learning department received an Honorable Mention from the  Council for Adult and Experiential Learning (CAEL ) and the  Western Interstate Commission for Higher Education  for its intentional approach and for expanding student options to receive credit for prior learning.  Credit for Prior Learning (CPL)  allows students to obtain college credit for knowledge and skills acquired outside of the traditional academic environment. This is exceptionally beneficial for adult learners, who, according to CAEL, have a 17% higher chance of graduating compared to those adults who don’t earn credits through prior learning programs. The CPL department at SLCC was created in 2020 and since then the volume of students served has grown as the department continues to expand. To be eligible for CPL, students must be working towards a degree, certificate, or apprenticeship. Director of Credit for Prior Learning at SLCC, Andrea Tipton, mentioned fee...
