Eligible SLCC Students Receive up to $750 for Higher Education COVID Relief

Kevin Rodriguez, SLCC Student.

Students enrolled in the School of Applied Technology (SAT) or for-credit classes for the 2022 Spring Semester will automatically receive a federal COVID relief one time check of $500 or $750. The amount students will receive depends upon Pell eligibility. Qualifying students who are Pell eligible will receive a one time check for $750, and qualifying students who are not Pell eligible will receive $500. Eligibility for the grant is not dependent upon citizenship status.

“This is great for SLCC students. The money can be used for things like tuition, books, housing, food, or childcare, while attending Salt Lake Community College,” said Ryan Farley, Associate VP for Enrollment Management. Funds can also be used to help with emergency costs associated with COVID-19.

Qualifying students signed up for direct deposit will automatically receive the funds in their designated bank account. Those who are not signed up for direct deposit will receive a check in the mail to the address on file with the college.

Farley says the college plans to distribute the money to students during the third week of Spring semester for students enrolled full term. Students registered for an 8-week course during the second term will receive their funds during that term at a date yet to be determined.

SLCC student, Kevin Rodiguez, said getting a check from the federal government during Spring Semester is good news. Keven, who is taking general education classes, said he plans to pay a couple of bills with the money. Another student Axell Gamboa said, “I’m definitely going to use it on classes because that’s more on the expensive side.” Axell said although he has some money saved up for Spring Semester it isn’t enough to cover all his tuition and the check will be a big help.

Students who want to take advantage of this grant should make sure to meet registration deadlines for Spring taking SAT or for-credit classes and ensure their direct deposit or refund preferences are current in MYSLCC.

In March 2021, President Biden appropriated about $39.6 billion for higher education to help assist students impacted by the pandemic. To learn more about the Higher Education Emergency Relief Fund (HEERF) refer to this federal government document.

Recognizing SLCC's 2025 Distinguished Faculty Lecturer Andrew Vogt, PhD Associate Professor, Engineering

The Distinguished Faculty Lecturer is a recognition of quality work by one of Salt Lake Community College’s full-time faculty and a charge to develop that work over an academic year into a public presentation. A committee chosen by the Associate Provost for Learning Advancement selects the faculty lecturer each year. The lecture takes place in the spring. Distinguished Faculty Lecturer Andrew Vogt, PhD Associate Professor, Engineering Dr. Andrew Vogt’s teaching philosophy is guided by two principles, curiosity and efficiency.  “Curiosity leads us to study a topic and allows us to really understand the ins and outs of research, while efficiency is all about sustainability,” he says. Andrew describes curiosity as a pure, open-minded impulse to explore, such as the ease with which children learn new concepts with virtually no instruction. Efficiency adds maturity to that childlike impulse, creating structures and pathways for accomplishment.  Andrew’s work has alwa...
