Meet Black Student Union Club President, Jevahjire France

Jevah France
Jevahjire France
Name: Jevahjire France, [goes by Jevah, pronounced "Gee Vah."]

Pronouns: He/Him

Residence: Millcreek

Major: Mechanical Engineering

Academic goals: Obtain an Associate of Pre-Engineering (APE) at SLCC then transfer to a 4-year institution.

Dream job: Being the owner or co-owner of a firm or foundation that is socially conscious in my home country [Haiti].

Plan B: No plan B.

Why higher education? It was never a question that I really had to ask myself. It always felt like the right thing to do. I was always told from a very young age that school is the way to success and getting the career of my dream, so here I am.

Why SLCC? It is close and affordable. I see it as a smart start when it comes to college.

What motivates you or inspires you at school or in life? Family. I want to be able to assist my loved ones, make my parents proud, and be able to provide for my own family when I have one. I want to be in a good position to help out my community overall.

Meaningful life or career lessons you have learned so far? I learned to seek out help when I need it. True, we should all have some level of some abstention and privacy, you don’t want all your stories out there. But I found myself closing doors and opportunities by not asking questions, and letting people know about some of the things going on in my life. Having said that, I believe it is a lifetime journey to find the balance.

Family: I am the youngest in a family of 6 children. All boys. My brother just adopted two bunnies recently, their names are Girelli and Rossuci, they are an extension of my family.

Hobbies: During my free time, I like to play soccer, volleyball and pickleball. I also enjoy going for a walk during sunset and sundown.

Awards/accomplishments: None that I want to mention.

Jevahjire won’t mention them, but here are just a few things he has accomplished:

Recognizing SLCC's 2025 Distinguished Faculty Lecturer Andrew Vogt, PhD Associate Professor, Engineering

The Distinguished Faculty Lecturer is a recognition of quality work by one of Salt Lake Community College’s full-time faculty and a charge to develop that work over an academic year into a public presentation. A committee chosen by the Associate Provost for Learning Advancement selects the faculty lecturer each year. The lecture takes place in the spring. Distinguished Faculty Lecturer Andrew Vogt, PhD Associate Professor, Engineering Dr. Andrew Vogt’s teaching philosophy is guided by two principles, curiosity and efficiency.  “Curiosity leads us to study a topic and allows us to really understand the ins and outs of research, while efficiency is all about sustainability,” he says. Andrew describes curiosity as a pure, open-minded impulse to explore, such as the ease with which children learn new concepts with virtually no instruction. Efficiency adds maturity to that childlike impulse, creating structures and pathways for accomplishment.  Andrew’s work has alwa...
