Any woman who has thought about running for public office or taking on a leadership role at work or in her community will be interested in the upcoming Real Women Run annual conference.
The all-day conference will be held Jan. 11, 8:30-4 p.m., at Salt Lake Community College’s Miller Campus, 9750 S. 300 W., Sandy. The entry fee is $15, and $10 for students or current members of YWCA Utah, the League of Women Voters or the American Association of University Women.
The day’s keynote speaker will be former Salt Lake Tribune editor Nancy Conway, who sill speak on “What It Takes For A Woman To Run In Utah – A Journalist’s View.” Other speakers include former Utah Governor Olene Walker. A panel moderated by Fox 13 anchor Nineveh Dinha will feature past Salt Lake City Mayor Deedee Coradini and former State Senator Carlene Walker among others.
“Utah women are remarkably capable, and they bring many valuable skills and important perspectives to political office at all levels of government,” said former state legislator and Real Women Run founding member Sheryl Allen. “All they need is opportunity, encouragement, training, and support.”
One of the goals for the event is to get more women interested in seeking a seat in Congress, which has 97 females in office but none from Utah. Organizers state that only seven states rank lower than Utah in terms of the number of female leaders in the state legislature.
