The world has changed. As our communities and spaces diversify, our leadership skills need to evolve. Especially during this particularly challenging time in our nation and society, we need leaders who have skills that inspire our current and future students. Sara Jones will share her insight on validating our own personal stories – everyone has one! She’ll discuss how to blend our stories together to contribute to a community of inclusion. Finally, she’ll bring deeper understanding to how we use our stories to bridge the issues that divide us.

Utah Education Network’s Reimagine Teaching program has $200 gift certificates for educators that complete four hours of professional development they have not already been compensated for. Follow these steps: 

  1. Sign Up by Oct. 1 to qualify and get updates 
  2. Complete four clock hours of professional learning between Jun. 1–Dec. 1, 2020. 
  3. Submit Proofof completion such as a certificate, email from the instructor, or department letter. 
  4. Accept recognition – $200 Amazon gift card (limited quantity available)

Equitable and Inclusive Teaching Practices online course 
Course begins the week of Sept. 28 and ends Nov. 20 
This online, facilitated course focuses on inclusive pedagogy and equity-minded teaching practices. This course should take approximately 2 hours per module for a total of 16 hours. Adjunct faculty will be compensated upon completion of the course.

Join Deidre Tyler for tech tips that promote sustainable development. In this new teaching environment, the questions that are asked are: What can I do to create a learning environment that is sustainable? What are some things that we can do in the educational environment that does not change each semester? One theory that we will discuss Replacement, Amplification and Transformation—RAT model. The tools that we will discuss are hyperdocs, Ted-x talks, break-out rooms and reflection.

From Equity Talk to Equity Walk

From Equity Talk to Equity Walk provides race-conscious guidance on designing and implementing effective campus change strategies that establish more expansive and equity-minded campus cultures.  Session one: Chapters 1–2 and Session two: Chapters 3–5.

Because Internet: Understand the New Rules of Language

Many people think the internet is ruining language and writing abilities, but this learning community will show you that language and writing is more alive and dynamic than ever before! Session one: Chapters 1–3; Session two: Chapters 4–5; Session three: Chapters 6–8.

Canvas User Credential Course 
Register by Nov. 10; complete by Dec. 10 
This course is a 12-hour, self-paced, fully online course. Look for course code DCUC in SLCC’s training registration system under eLearning. 

 

Creating Proctored Exams in Canvas with Proctorio 
Oct. 6 
1:30–2:30 p.m.; virtual 
Proctorio is a secure online proctoring service software that integrates with Canvas. At SLCC, Proctorio has primarily been used for online courses, but it is currently available for on-campus and hybrid courses while SLCC’s Testing Center is unavailable. 


Registration in SLCC’s training registration system under eLearning. Look for course code DCP1.

Developing Excellent Reflection Prompts & Activities 

Oct. 6 

2–3 p.m.; virtual 

We want students to be reflective practitioners regardless of their major. What are the theoretical and practical underpinnings of deep reflective practice? This workshop will feature hands-on training in developing more effective reflection prompts and activities to help students better integrate reflection in their learning. Participants will finish the workshop with new or updated reflection prompts or activities for their courses and will write their own reflection for their professional ePortfolio.

Beyond Blue: Understanding Mental Illness 
Oct. 7, 10–11:30 a.m.; virtual—a recording will be available 

One in four Americans will experience a mental illness in their lifetimes; It is imperative that every employee is aware of the risks and signs of the various mental illness, as well as coping strategies and pathways to support. Facilitated by Nancy Scherlong, LCSW, PTR, M/S, Psychotherapy and Wellness Coaching, Reliant Behavioral Health.


Register for this workshop under Staff Development, although it is open to all employees. 

 

ACUE: Inclusive Teaching Practices Toolkit 

ACUE is excited to introduce a set of free resources — including videos and downloadable planning guides — that can be immediately put to use to benefit both faculty and their students. These practices are tailored for online teaching but are also relevant to the physical classroom.
