Students Called to Participate in Short Film Contest 'Healing Out Loud'

Salt Lake Community College is one of many Utah-based colleges and universities participating in Healing Out Loud, the Huntsman Mental Health Institute's social media short film contest. The contest encourages students to use filmmaking to create inclusive and open conversations surrounding their emotional, psychological and social well-being. All SLCC students are eligible to enter the contest.

Winners will receive prizes and have their videos featured at a Mental Health Awareness Month event and a suicide prevention awareness campaign.

Submission Parameters

Submissions should be 30-seconds-long (or shorter) video that is creative and in a format suitable to share through social media. Acceptable forms of content are original music, dance, spoken word, art, poetry and speech. All types of video production are welcome, including videos shot through a cellphone camera. However, please avoid all use of brands, meet all copyright standards, and do not include graphic images or video, provide false information or share details of a suicide attempt or death.

How to Enter

  1. Submit through Instagram:
    1. Post your video to Instagram.
    2. Tag SLCC's Instagram (@saltlakecc).
    3. Tag Huntsman Mental Health’s Instagram (@uofuhmhi).
    4. Add the hashtag #HealingOutLoud.
    5. Complete the Contest Entry Form.
  2. Submit through the private Healing Out Loud Contest Form.

SLCC Alumnus and U.S. Diplomat to Speak at 2025 Commencement

Salt Lake Community College’s 2025 Commencement speaker Branigan Knowlton will share his perspectives drawn from a 12-year career as a Foreign Service Officer with the U.S. Department of State. In serving his country, Knowlton has honed his foreign relations and diplomacy skills in Hong Kong, Mexico, Colombia and Italy. Knowlton is also a proud Salt Lake Community College (SLCC) alumnus (2002).     Knowlton currently serves at the U.S. Embassy in Rome. Before reporting to the embassy, he was detailed to the Italian Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport as part of the Transatlantic Diplomatic Fellowship program. In Bogotá, Knowlton worked for the Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement, and in Hermosillo, Mexico, he worked for the Bureau of Consular Affairs.
