Salt Lake Community College Holds Evening of Honor


SLCC Evening of Honor: Event Provides Students with Scholarships
Salt Lake Community College held its 2012 Evening of Honor Scholarship Dinner. Utah Senate President Michael G. Waddoups and McQueen Financial Group managing partner Roger McQueen were presented with honorary doctorate degrees.
Roger McQueen has worked for Northwestern Mutual for 38 years in various leadership roles. He became a Managing Partner in 1991 in Wisconsin.  In 1997, he was asked to oversee the Utah General Agency and has since been the Managing Partner in Utah.  Under his leadership, the business has grown to 75 full time representatives and 35 college interns from all colleges and universities throughout the state. 
McQueen has served on the Salt Lake Community College Foundation Board for 10 years and is a member of the Salt Lake Rotary Club. He was one of the original 19 participant teams of the 190- mile Ragnar Relay/Wasatch Back race, and was the oldest finisher that year.  He continues to sponsor and run the race every year with colleagues and family.  
Utah Senate President Michael G. Waddoups was appointed to the House of Representatives in 1987 and elected to the House in 1988.  He served as House Rules Committee Chair and House Majority Whip.  He was appointed and elected to the Senate in 1996. 
Waddoups chaired the Senate Rules Committee in 2001, 2002 and again in 2005 and 2006.  Senator Waddoups served as the Senate Majority Leader 2003-2004. He was elected President of the Senate in2008 and continues to serve in this capacity.

The College also recognized Laura Procunier and Phillip Chipping as Distinguished Alumni.
Procunier joined her father Ron as a Funeral Director at Broomhead Funeral Home in Riverton, Utah. She has worked and served in Utah and nationally, volunteering with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and the National Disaster Medical System and on disaster response teams that responded in the aftermath of September 11th in New York and Hurricane Katrina in Mississippi.  
As one of only nine women licensed as funeral directors in Utah, Procunier is a member of the Mortuary Science Program Advisory Committee at Salt Lake Community College. In this role, she helped to launch the College Mortuary Science associates degree program. She has served on the Board of the Utah Funeral Directors Association for six years.
Chipping founded the business ZAGG to market his most popular invention the invisibleSHIELD – a plastic film that protects electronic devices like the BlackBerry and iPhone. He later founded knowonder!, an online resource for parents and children that offers a new story each day available on computers and mobiledevices. Along with a group of likeminded entrepreneurs, Chipping established the SLCC Entrepreneurial Scholarship. 
The annual College Teaching Excellence Awards will be presented to Mary Alvarez, Kyle Costello, Melanie Dance, Terry Martin and Lois Oestreich. The College Innovation of the Year Award will be presented to the SLCC Community Writing Center's Salt Lake Teens Write Program.

    I heard about this community college various times and i know they are performing well and i hope they will do manage more Evening of Honor in the same manner.

SLCC Alumnus and U.S. Diplomat to Speak at 2025 Commencement

Salt Lake Community College’s 2025 Commencement speaker Branigan Knowlton will share his perspectives drawn from a 12-year career as a Foreign Service Officer with the U.S. Department of State. In serving his country, Knowlton has honed his foreign relations and diplomacy skills in Hong Kong, Mexico, Colombia and Italy. Knowlton is also a proud Salt Lake Community College (SLCC) alumnus (2002).     Knowlton currently serves at the U.S. Embassy in Rome. Before reporting to the embassy, he was detailed to the Italian Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport as part of the Transatlantic Diplomatic Fellowship program. In Bogotá, Knowlton worked for the Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement, and in Hermosillo, Mexico, he worked for the Bureau of Consular Affairs. Recognizing SLCC's 2025 Distinguished Faculty Lecturer Andrew Vogt, PhD Associate Professor, Engineering

The Distinguished Faculty Lecturer is a recognition of quality work by one of Salt Lake Community College’s full-time faculty and a charge to develop that work over an academic year into a public presentation. A committee chosen by the Associate Provost for Learning Advancement selects the faculty lecturer each year. The lecture takes place in the spring. Distinguished Faculty Lecturer Andrew Vogt, PhD Associate Professor, Engineering Dr. Andrew Vogt’s teaching philosophy is guided by two principles, curiosity and efficiency.  “Curiosity leads us to study a topic and allows us to really understand the ins and outs of research, while efficiency is all about sustainability,” he says.
