Utah ShakeOut Part 1

Earthquake Awareness Month

SLCC has declared April Earthquake Awareness Month.  Earthquakes can cause significant property damage, personal injuries, even loss of life. Proper planning can help minimize effects caused by earthquakes.

The “Great Utah Shakeout Drill” will take place later this month. For more information about earthquakes, safety, or the drill itself, visit http://www.shakeout.org/utah/.

The following guidelines should be followed in the event of an earthquake:

·      If you are inside, stay inside.  Do not try to move outside or to a different location until the shaking stops.  Do not use elevators.

·      Drop, Cover, and Hold On. This simple action protects lives and prevents injuries from falling furniture and flying objects that can become projectiles during ground shaking.

·      In an earthquake, drop to the floor, make yourself as small a target as possible, and take cover under a sturdy desk or table or near an interior wall, covering your head with your hands and arms and holding on to your shelter. Don't seek shelter in a doorway.

·      Stay away from windows and areas that are in the path of falling or flying objects such as bookcases, file cabinets, lamps, computers, chandeliers, etc.

·      If you are outside, stay outside and stay away from buildings, utility, fuel, and gas lines.

Once the shaking stops, proceed carefully to a safe prearranged gathering location outside and away from buildings so an assessment and accounting of everyone can be completed.
