SLCC's PACE program receives $10,000 donation from Northwestern Mutual Foundation

Roger McQueen, CEO of the McQueen Financial Group, presented a $10,000 check on behalf of the Northwestern Mutual Foundation to President Bioteau on Friday, July 20.

The money will go to support the College’s new Partnerships for Accessing College Education (PACE) program.

Students from West High School have already begun the new program, which is a unique partnership between education and business that brings local school systems, local businesses, and the College together to offer an incentive program that provides high school students with opportunities for employment during summer recesses and potential internships during their academic years.

Those who complete the program will receive full two-year academic scholarships to attend Salt Lake Community College after high school.

The College has already expanded the program beyond West High school and is looking to further extend the program’s reach to schools from across the valley and the surrounding region.

After McQueen presented the College with the check, President Bioteau thanked him for being a long-time supporter of the College. "Roger McQueen is a remarkable ambassador in the community for our College, and we are the benefactors of his community service," President Bioteau said. "It is with the greatest excitement that I accept this donation for the PACE program."

McQueen has also contributed to many other programs and initiatives at the College—including the Health Sciences Center and the SLCC Evening of Honor.

He received an Honorary Doctorate award from the College at the 2012 Commencement ceremony.

This is exceptionally beneficial for adult learners, who, according to CAEL, have a 17% higher chance of graduating compared to those adults who don’t earn credits through prior learning programs. The CPL department at SLCC was created in 2020 and since then the volume of students served has grown as the department continues to expand. To be eligible for CPL, students must be working towards a degree, certificate, or apprenticeship. Director of Credit for Prior Learning at SLCC, Andrea Tipton, mentioned fee...
