Athletic Scholarships, Soccer - Game Changers for Two Athletes

Callie Fisher (left) and Whitney Turner

Can scholarships change lives? There are two Salt Lake Community College soccer players who think so.

After donating their time recently for a photoshoot to help market and promote SLCC, Whitney Turner and Callie Fisher, friends on and off the pitch for the SLCC women’s soccer team, agreed to a Q & A about their experiences at the college, the game of soccer, their athletic scholarships and their plans for the future. Here’s what they had to say.

We should also mention, Whitney, Callie and the rest of the women’s team (11-0-1), along with the men’s team (12-0-1), will square off against opponents Nov. 1-2 for Region 18 supremacy in the Scenic West Athletic Conference at Real Academy’s Zions Bank Stadium in Herriman. Click on each team's link embedded above for more information.

Whitney Turner

Age:
19

Hometown:
West Bountiful, Utah

Grade:
Sophomore

Currently studying/expected SLCC degree:
General studies

Dream job:
Astronomer. I love physics and math and I have always been interested in topics concerning outer space and our universe.

Plan B:
Something else physics related.

Plans after SLCC:
I want to transfer somewhere out of state and hopefully play soccer. I want to go to a university and see what it is like outside of Utah.

Why chose SLCC:
It was the closest to home and the cheapest. I also get to play soccer, so, that was a plus.

What I like best about SLCC:
I love the people at SLCC. Everybody is so nice – it doesn’t matter who you are talking to.

What I tell others about SLCC:
That it is a really good school and to not let the “community college” title change your mind.

Favorite memories at SLCC:
All of my favorite memories that I have at SLCC have come from being on the soccer team. It is so fun to be involved in the school every day.

Comments on scholarship:
Getting a scholarship for soccer has meant so much to me. Personally, if it weren’t for that scholarship, I would not have been able to afford to go to college this year. It has impacted my life in many positive ways, and I am forever grateful.

What it is like being involved in the soccer team:
Being involved on the soccer team is absolutely amazing. I have met so many great people and made so many friends from it, and my life has been changed forever because of it.

What I have learned from playing soccer:
I have learned many things from playing soccer, but the thing I would say that I have learned the most would be how to quickly make friends and talk to other people. When you are on a team, you have to come together quickly in order to do good, and it has helped my social skills outside of soccer as well.

Background on soccer experience:
I started playing soccer when I was about 3 or 4 years old and have been playing ever since. I cannot remember a time in my life where soccer wasn’t involved. My whole life revolves around soccer, and it means so much to me. I don’t know what I would do without all I have learned or all the people I have met through soccer.

What you would say to students, staff and faculty to get them to see a game:
I would tell them that it is an amazing environment to be in. We are a good team (#5 in the nation) and very fun to watch play. We play at the Zion’s Bank Stadium where the RSL Academy plays, and it is actually a very nice and cool stadium to be in. Overall, it is a great experience!

Callie Fisher

Age:
19

Hometown:
Sandy, Utah

Grade:
Sophomore

Currently studying/expected SLCC degree:
General education, but once I graduate with my associate’s degree I will start my major in interior design.

Dream job:
My dream job would be to travel the world and design homes and business buildings around the world.

Plan B:
My plan B would be to become an interior designer and just travel to close locations to design homes.

Plans after SLCC:
My plans after SLCC are to transfer to a D1 university to play soccer and start my career and hopefully get married. I graduate this fall, so, I will be transferring in the spring.

Why chose SLCC:
I chose SLCC because I knew the coaches and I love them all. They have helped me so much with soccer and to decide what to do with my future.  The school also has amazing programs to get me started.

What you like best about SLCC:
I love how SLCC is so diverse.  I have met so many amazing people from all around the world here at SLCC.

Favorite memories so far of SLCC:
My favorite memories here at SLCC are playing soccer and helping our school win our first two region banners.  Now when I come back to watch games, I can always remember our first time winning those banners and the feelings I got.

Comments on scholarship:
I am on athletic scholarship right now, and I can't express how much this scholarship meant to me. It has helped me so much. I wouldn't be able to continue my soccer career if it weren't for the scholarship money.

What you tell others about SLCC:
I talk very highly of SLCC and how much it has changed my life and impacted me. SLCC was the best thing that happened to me. I wasn't sure what I was going to do after high school. I didn't have the money for anything, so, it was hard to decide.

What it’s like being involved on this soccer team:
Being on the soccer team has been an amazing experience for me. I don't know what I would have done without it. I have learned so much from my teammates and coaches, and they have all been there for me through everything.  I have met some of my best friends on the team.

What you have learned from playing soccer:
I have learned so much from playing soccer it has taught me lots of new soccer skills, but it has also taught me life lessons.

Background on soccer experience:
I was three years old when I started soccer. I have five brothers, and my mom wanted me to be a girly-girl, wear pink and dance. But when I first touched a soccer ball, I fell in love with the game and it has been going on since that day. Soccer has been an amazing experience for me. I have learned so much and met so many people who I will never forget.

What you would say to students, staff and faculty to get them to see a game:
We would love it if you would come out to our games and support us as we take on challenging teams. We love when we have new people come out to support our games.  We know the drive is a little far (to Real Academy in Herriman), but we promise it will be worth it.  Thank you for all you do.

Recognizing SLCC's 2025 Distinguished Faculty Lecturer Andrew Vogt, PhD Associate Professor, Engineering

The Distinguished Faculty Lecturer is a recognition of quality work by one of Salt Lake Community College’s full-time faculty and a charge to develop that work over an academic year into a public presentation. A committee chosen by the Associate Provost for Learning Advancement selects the faculty lecturer each year. The lecture takes place in the spring. Distinguished Faculty Lecturer Andrew Vogt, PhD Associate Professor, Engineering Dr. Andrew Vogt’s teaching philosophy is guided by two principles, curiosity and efficiency.  “Curiosity leads us to study a topic and allows us to really understand the ins and outs of research, while efficiency is all about sustainability,” he says. Andrew describes curiosity as a pure, open-minded impulse to explore, such as the ease with which children learn new concepts with virtually no instruction. Efficiency adds maturity to that childlike impulse, creating structures and pathways for accomplishment.  Andrew’s work has alwa...
