SLCC Will Award Course Credits for Technical College Programs

Salt Lake Community College and the Utah System of Technical Colleges (UTech) have entered into an agreement that will now make it easier than ever for UTech students to seamlessly transfer to SLCC. Specifically, the agreement permits the college and each of UTech’s eight institutions to develop articulation arrangements that allow students attending technical college to convert their training into credit toward a degree at SLCC.

“SLCC is proud to recognize the hard work of UTech students and looks forward to welcoming them to SLCC as they move toward completion of their associate’s degree,” said Eric Heiser, dean of SLCC’s School of Applied Technology & Technical Specialties.  “These new agreements will take the guesswork out of the transfer process and provide students with more educational options. We’re proud to be a leader in non-credit to credit articulation, and this new partnership serves to benefit potentially thousands of students in Utah.”

Awarding credits for a technical college program means students, once at SLCC, won’t be repeating competencies or incurring additional and unnecessary costs while pursuing a degree or certificate. “These articulation agreements will create much-needed opportunities for students at Utah’s technical colleges to build stackable credentials,” said Jared Haines, UTech’s Interim Commissioner of Technical Education. “Everyone wins. Students win with starting right into a high-skilled occupation with their technical college certificate and build it into a degree that will further advance their careers; employers win with the most highly-skilled, productive and dedicated employees; and Utah wins with an economy strengthened by a highly competitive workforce.”

UTech is the governing organization for Utah’s regional technical colleges, from St. George in the south to Logan in northern Utah. Established by the State of Utah, UTech’s role is to meet business and industry needs for technically-skilled workers and to promote economic development by providing market-driven technical education to secondary and adult students.

HB 261 and HB 257 Frequently Asked Questions

Dear Faculty, Staff and Students: The Utah Legislature recently passed two bills that significantly impact higher education:  HB 261  Equal Opportunity Initiatives and HB  257  Sex-Based Designations for Privacy, Anti-Bullying, and Women’s Opportunities. While there are many unknowns about the ultimate effect these bills will have on some student and staff support programs, be assured that SLCC will maintain an environment where all can find success and feel a sense of belonging. In the coming months, college leadership will work to gain clarity and determine the changes necessary for legislative compliance. We will also share this information as it becomes available.  We realize that during this time, some in our college community may feel unsettled and stressed.
