The Salt Lake Community College Men’s Basketball team opens its 2012-2013 season at the PC Andrus tournament in Sells, Arizona. Last season, SLCC had a record of 22-9, finishing at 9-6 in the Scenic West Athletic Conference (SWAC).
"Our expectations are the same as they are every year—our goal is to win our conference," said head coach Todd Phillips. "We’ve got some sophomores who have experience and we’ve got some great freshmen that will compliment that. I’m confident that we’ve got a really good team to put out there on the floor this season."
Last year, SLCC Men’s Basketball entered the Region 18 Championships as the No. 2 seed, but was defeated in its opening tournament match-up by conference rival North Idaho College (NIC).
Since the 2004-05 season, the Bruins are 180-52 overall, and have posted a SWAC record of 78-40. During that span the Bruins haven’t had a single season with more than nine losses. The Bruins won the NJCAA National Championship in 2009, were NJCAA National Runners-Up in 2008, have won the Region 18 Championship twice since 2004 and were Region 18 Runners-Up twice as well.
Since the program began intercollegiate competition in 1986, SLCC Men’s Basketball has had more than 160 players move on to compete and study at four-year institutions—an average of more than six players per season.
Head Coach Todd Phillips begins his second full season as SLCC Men’s Basketball head coach. Phillips and his staff moved eight of their players from the 2011-2012 SLCC Men’s squad on to compete and study at four-year institutions.
Phillips became head coach for the Bruins after serving as an assistant coach for three years under coach Norm Parrish. In 2009, Phillips and Parrish led the College to its first ever National Championship, defeating Midland (Texas) 67-60 in the NJCAA Championship Game in Hutchinson, Kansas.
