The Salt Lake Community College Women’s Basketball team begins its 2012-13 season ranked No. 14 by the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) poll. The Bruins turned in an overall record of 18-13 last season, finishing with a 7-8 mark in the Scenic West Athletic Conference (SWAC). The Bruins finished the 2011-12 year as Region 18 runner-up, defeating rival College of Southern Idaho and defending NJCAA National Champion North Idaho College during the tournament.
The team opened its season with a loss to Gillette College 80-76 On Friday, November 2, but followed that loss with a win over No. 10-ranked Casper College 41-39 the following day.
“The thing that stands out most to me about this team is how hard they compete, they bring a competitive edge to practice with them every single day," head coach Betsy Specketer said. "It doesn’t matter what we’re doing, from the weight room to conditioning drills to any other drills we do in practice—they work hard regardless and it’s been very nice to see that from a coaching perspective.”
Since 1996-97, the Bruins has an overall record of 361-158 and is 194-92 in SWAC competition. In that span, SLCC has won four regular season SWAC Championships, two Region 18 Championships and finished as Region 18 runner-up seven times. SLCC Women’s Basketball has finished in the NJCAA Top 20 five times in the past seven seasons.
Betsy Specketer begins her 17th season leading the SLCC Women’s Basketball program. She has a 360-150 career record.
Over the last ten years, 25 SLCC players have been recognized as Academic All-Americans, 21 players have been recognized as Distinguished Academic All-Americans, and 72 players have been named to the Scenic West Academic team. Since 1996, more than 65 of her players go on to compete and study at four-year institutions.
