2023: SLCC Provost's Graduates of Excellence

Provost Graduates of Excellence is a prestigious distinction that recognizes hard work, commitment and selflessness. One student is selected from each school and General Studies. Many students apply to receive this honor. These students have excellent GPAs and typically receive scholarships and awards for their academic achievements. They have demonstrated leadership skills and a dedication to serving others, in addition to other notable achievements related to the creative arts, athletic excellence or involvement in SLCC beyond the classroom.

Business Management

I was a teen mom and an addict. I wanted to go to school but didn’t want to cause financial stress on my family and kids. I found SLCC and soon discovered that it was the perfect fit for my educational needs. By early 2020, I applied, enrolled and was set to start at the college, but then COVID hit. I was furloughed from my job, the college shut down and everything went fully remote. Despite the frustration, loss and suffering that life has brought, I applied for graduation in Fall 2022. My feelings of shock and joy are tangible. I am graduating before my firstborn and achieving my personal educational goal. I’m proud to be a mom, full-time employee, wife and soon-to-be college graduate.

Psychology

As a first-generation student of color, I like taking part in community engagement projects. It affords me the opportunity to change the perception that people have of my background and leave a positive representation of my community. Being president of the SLCC Psychology Club has allowed me the opportunity to grow, develop leadership skills, learn to communicate and acquire management skills. I am deeply involved in the SLCC community, where I have defined myself as a creative person. The events I have participated in at SLCC have not only provided me the space to express myself but have created an outlet for me to share my writing.

Welding Fabrication and Inspection

Frank Buckler and Jacob Adkinson have greatly influenced my welding career. Frank recruited me into the program and taught me the basics of welding, and Jacob helped me improve my welding skills. Because of their help, I’ve not only stayed in the program, but I have also succeeded in it. I am a first-generation college student and a female in a male-dominated trade. Choosing a trade instead of the traditional education route has changed my life, and I am looking forward to these next couple of years of learning in school and in the field. I hope to give back and teach others eager to learn the same welding knowledge and skills that I acquired at SLCC.

SLCC Business School is Utah’s First to be Named Exclusively After a Woman

Salt Lake Community College (SLCC) proudly announces a partnership with the Larry H. & Gail Miller Family Foundation to modernize its Business Building and transform its School of Business. The improvements are made possible through a generous $10 million gift from the Miller Family Foundation and Gail Miller, the largest-ever single cash donation received by the college.  SLCC is renaming its Business Building the Larry H. & Gail Miller Family Business Building in honor of the Miller family’s legacy and contributions to the community. The business school will be named the Gail Miller School of Business in recognition of the strong business acumen Gail Miller displays as a community leader and as the owner and immediate past chair of the Larry H. Miller Company. This name change will make SLCC home to the only business school in Utah and one of only a few in the country to be named exclusively after a woman.  “We are deeply humbled by the generosity of Gail and the Miller fam
