SLCC Participates in Utah Recycling Competition for National RecycleMania


Salt Lake Community College was involved in a special event that included Utah’s colleges and universities as part of the national RecycleMania event. SLCC students competed alongside their peers from other Utah institutions in a computer disassembly contest that tested their recycling knowledge and awareness. 

The contest took place at Tamsolutions, a computer recycling company located in Lindon, UT. The Recycling Coalition of Utah sponsored the friendly competition as part of a broader 8-week campaign to raise awareness for the need to reduce waste, increase recycling and promote conservation issues across campuses.

 Utah schools competed in a Utah only, state-wide competition, in five categories: (1) most recyclable pounds per person collected, (2) waste minimization, (3) most improved recycling program, (4) MVP Award to the “Most Valuable Program" and, for the first time, (5) E-waste Recycling. 

 Utah’s colleges combined have more than 250,000 people utilizing recycling each day, saving the State of Utah hundreds of thousands of dollars each year. The RecycleMania event highlighted the programs and the materials state colleges recycle. SLCC alone recycles 31 different types of materials.

 The Recycling Coalition of Utah (RCU) is a coalition of municipalities, businesses, institutions, and individuals committed to improving recycling in Utah. As the State of Utah's official resource for recycling, RCU works to increase and improve recycling, conservation and solid waste reduction in Utah.

Volleyball Team Also Excels in the Classroom

The Salt Lake Community College volleyball program is one of the nation's top junior college programs on the court but the Bruins are also one of the leaders in the classroom. The program released its academic accomplishments from the 2018-19 academic year over the Memorial Day weekend, celebrating several individual and team accomplishments.
